Late 30's ladies - where do you buy work clothes?

I have completelh lost my way when it comes to buying clothes. I desperately need some smarter work clothes as hardly have anything since return from mat leave.
I want to buy in the sales but I don't know what to buy or where from. I am 38 and 5'3 and had a browse around town yesterday but came home empty handed. I feel too old for some shops but then not ready for others. I really don't know what to buy.
I'm aldo trying to be strict about only buying in my autumn colours but this narrows it down even further as I have to rule so much out that I might like.

Please can anyone give me some advice to make this a bit easier and less time consuming? I would rather go shopping with a bit of a plan as at the moment I'm just wandering round and not getting anywhere. Thanks.

The neckline seemed quite high, I am quite full busted so was put off the dress. I might try it.

That's interesting mami I have ordered it too! I was put off for the same reasons as philoslothy but decided to give it a whirl. It has been despatched, but not yet arrived.

I had the same concern Philo - am a 38H! But it is something about the way the stripes go that just makes it look really good despite the neckline!
I also saw this in RL today and it may be a work contender as it was a good price for the quality. Will go and try on next week when in town - hope the wrap detail is not too fiddly.

Jemster: for petite work dresses try Banana Republic petite (sales are frequent), Next petite, Linea (at House of Fraser) and Principles petite (occasionally have a decent plain shift dress). Also H&M sometimes do shift dresses that come up quite small. Dorothy Perkins petite also ok for work dresses though quality not great.

Like other shorties though I use a local seamstress to alter some of my clothes.
