Best place to get 12yo measured for a bra?

MrsPresley · 29/12/2013 09:22

My DD has been wearing a 30c, took her to M&S just before Christmas and the lady put her in a 36A.

Now I'm not sure this is the right size and DD won't let me see her in just her bra Grin

I'm not sure if her dress size is any indication to her back size but she wears a size 8/10, but her breasts are, how can I put this, bloody huge!

She won't let me measure her the way that has been discussed on here ( I changed from a 42b to 38d thank you!).

I'm just not sure an A cup is right for her and I certainly don't think she is 36 around the back, I'm sure she measured at 31 but can't be certain.

We're in Edinburgh so have a decent selection of shops, are debenhams any better than M&S?

I have always found John Lewis good for my DD, we are in the south east, but hopefully the Edinburgh store will be as good.

ilovepowerhoop · 29/12/2013 09:38

theres no way she is a 36 back! I am a size 20/22 and have a 37/38 inch back so unless she is enormous she is in the wrong size. would she have a go at measuring herself?

ilovepowerhoop · 29/12/2013 09:40

p.s. an A cup means only 1 inch difference between the under bust and over bust figure which sounds unlikely if you are saying her breasts are big.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 29/12/2013 09:41

Will she let you measure her wearing just a vest?

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 29/12/2013 09:42

If you're standing behind her with the tape measure, so can't see anything and she doesn't have to look at you, would that be ok?
If you can get her measurements for her, then she can just try on a few to find something comfortable.

MrsPresley · 29/12/2013 09:51

Thank you, I never thought of John Lewis!

I'll try the vest suggestion Grin can't believe in a matter of months she's went from running around half naked to covering up like a nun Grin. Still, I suppose it had to happen

Or I'll see if she can measure herself, at least we could have a wee starting point.

There's definitely more than 1 inch difference, looking at her clothed I would say possibly 5 Shock

If she had been wearing a 30C with the size m&s put her in and what you say, I would guess a 28DD!
You can do it standing behind her and she puts the tape measure in the right place at the front, but if she is that sort of size then she's in Bravissimo range

Fairylea · 29/12/2013 10:28

Would she measure herself if you give a demonstration on yourself first? Make it a giggle maybe...

HazleNutt · 29/12/2013 10:33

a size 8 in a 36 bra Shock and M&S keeps claiming their "fitting" is great. This is criminal, the poor girl could wrap the 36 bra around her 3 times and will soon have backpain from unsupported chest.

go to Bravissimo: www.bravissimo.com/stores/edinburgh/

charitymum · 29/12/2013 10:43

My 14 year old is in size 10 and is in 36A MandS bra - it fits well and she her chest similarly exploded overnight! I've never had a problem going back into Marks to get a second opinion when I think they've measured off.

mysteryfairy · 29/12/2013 10:52

My 11 year old daughter was measured in debenhams and what they came up with was similar to what I got using the intervention method on he

goodasitgets · 29/12/2013 10:53

A 36 band would be very unusual for a size 10
I wear a 32/34 band at a size 16. You don't add inches, your underbust measurements is your band measurements

goodasitgets · 29/12/2013 10:53

And an A cup is 1 inch difference in between band and cup

ilovepowerhoop · 29/12/2013 10:56

A 36 back sound big for a size 10. I have a 38 back at size 20/22. I would remeasure your dd yourself and get the correct size for her. M&S routinely add 4inches to the back size and therefore make the back size too big and the cup size too small

Theas18 · 29/12/2013 11:02

Go to bravissimo. They are totally lovely and fit well. Even if she isn't bravissimo sized they'll tell you what the think you should try.

Youngest has been a bravissimo girl since age 11, every time we've tried elsewhere it's been awful.

Debenhams just can't be arsed to really help " the fitters out" " you didn't book/were really busy" ( not that they were) on different occasions...

John Lewis ok but nothing actually fitted..

M&s rude and incompetent - starting with " you shouldn't be wearing wires at 12" (we'll try making non wired bras in a 28DD then!) to " we don't make size x I'm sure a bigger band will be fine"

If she's a 28 with significant boobage I suggest a bravissimo fitted bra then an eBay search for the same bra in last years colours. They're about half price.

17leftfeet · 29/12/2013 11:05

My dd aged 12 measures as 28D but finds anything below a 32 band too tight -wears size 8 clothes

I've given up trying to convince her that bras are supposed to be snug

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2013 11:27

I'm Edinburgh based and have tried everywhere bra based. If you look at thebetterbracampaign.blogspot.co.uk there is a review of the fitting in Edinburgh M&S. It's shockingly bad.

If she's only an 8-10 and M&S got her in a 36A, then chances are she measures around 37" overbust. In which case you're probably looking at somewhere in the 28G-30F territory at a guess. Skip all the others and just take her to Bravissimo, seriously. John Lewis are OK and the best place if you are too small in the cup for Bravissimo (start at D) but I very strongly doubt that she is too small. And they're close by anyway.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2013 11:31

BTW - What M &S do is measure the underbust. They don't pull the tape measure even remotely (and even do it over tops sometimes) so routinely are 2-3" too big straight away. THEN they add inches - they add 5" if they've got an odd number, 4" if an even.

So, one of us who tested them measures 29" underbust. They measured it loosely, got 31" and then added 5" to make her a 36! Reality is she wears a 30, occasionally a 28.

CadiM · 29/12/2013 14:30

I agree with the Bravissimo recommendations, I've always found the Edinburgh branch to be very friendly.

MrsPresley · 29/12/2013 14:54

Thank you for all your help. I didn't know there was a Bravissamo in Edinburgh, so will try there before the schools go back Smile

PastaandCheese · 29/12/2013 15:17

Agree with Bravissimo. Sales staff are so nice they will put her at her ease. Robes in the changing room too if she is self conscious.

I'm also shocked at the 36.... I'm a size 12 and 7 months pregnant with all the rib cage expansion that involves and I'm in a 34! Show her this thread so we can convince her we are right and M&S are wrong.

PolkaDotParty · 29/12/2013 15:58

Another Bravissimo vote. They're great and don't use tape measures so may make her feel more at ease. I've always felt so much more comfortable in Bravisissimo fitted bras than anywhere else.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2013 16:10

It's on Multrees Walk, at the St James Centre end.
