Orthodontic work in mid thirties?

Chicinwellies · 28/12/2013 21:05

I am happy overall with the whole ageing gracefully business but my two front teeth have started to cross over (point towards each other) and although not monstrous I wonder if it's worth having work done. I'd not want to have railway tracks again I'm still mentally scarred by my first snog in braces but thought more retainer style etc. Advice please gratefully received.

Speak to your dentist for advice and local recommendations?

This is top of my list of things to do when we get some existing debt paid off. I had braces as a child, and even had two teeth removed but I have a tooth which has returned to stickingibg out rather badly.

YouHaveBeenOutbid · 29/12/2013 17:32

I think it's worth it. I'm currently sporting top and bottom train tracks but there are alternatives like invisalign or having them fitted to the backs of your teeth but these will be more costly options.

Maybe someone here can recommend an orthodontist in your area? I can recommend one in Edinburgh, pm me if you'd like his name.

Have a look at the Inman aligner. I had one and now have lovely teeth. Took 16 weeks.

ChristmasJumperWearer · 29/12/2013 17:49

I had Invisalign years ago but the Inman sounds good too. Was in my thirties when I had the work done and it was definitely worth it (could afford it at the time).

Invisalign has a good reputation. But in my experience of orthodontistry (and I had it done in my thirties) is they will drift again if you don't wear a retainer overnight for life. You shouldn't bother spending the money if you're not prepared to do that.

Frozenatchristmas · 29/12/2013 17:54

Agreed about the retainer. Mine is fixed though so there all the time.

Jaffacakesallround · 29/12/2013 19:10

There are about 6 kinds of braces/aligners and at least 3 are invisible.
If it's any help my mum had train tracks for the first time at 75!

I'm sporting tracks on both upper and lower at the moment and I hate them, but I have bad crossover on my lower teeth and had started to get horrible crossover on one side at the top too. I will have a fixed retainer fitted at the end, plus an overnight retainer to wear. I am soooooo looking forward to having straight teeth! I hate smiling with the braces though - hopefully won't be more than another 6 months or so til I'm done.

The Invisalign were a bit more expensive, but not that much in the grand scheme of things - what put me off is that the ortho said they would take longer to work because my teeth need to move quite a lot, plus I may need fixed braces for a short while at the end anyway to get everything right - so I figured I would go for a short, sharp pain with the fixed ones.

Came on to say the same thing everyone else has about wearing a retainer for life - used to work for an orthodontist & they used to frequently rant that it was a waste of time & money unless you did that.

Will invisalign help close gaps, as well as an overbite?

BogeyNights · 04/01/2014 21:17

I'm in the process of correcting overlapping lower teeth. I needed my top set moving too otherwise my 'bite' wouldn't sit correctly. So I've been in braces since September.

Initially I had an Inman Aligner on my top set with an arch expander to make space for my teeth to move. Then after about 6 weeks I had an Invisalign fitted to 'tweak' a twisted tooth. They look great now.

Since then I've had an Inman Aligner on my lowers to correct the 'real' problem, my lower crossover. I've worn it for 5 weeks and they are almost perfect already. Inman's are quick and efficient.

I'm having permanent retainers fitted once I'm finished.
