There's no point buying a new bra whilst bfing, is there?

I'm not loving the matronly, low-slung medicine balls in sacks that I currently have as a result of bfing, and I can't help but think that a decent bra would take off about half a stone. But is there such thing as a flattering nursing bra?

depends - how well fitting is the one your wearing at the moment? If its miles out on size, an not very flattering new one could work miracles.

How old is your child? I know some people who are down to feeds at home only who wear (very well fitted) normal bras.

I've bought from nursing bra shop who have more choice that I can access round here.

Unless you are planning on giving up BF very soon, get yourself some decent support. It is worth it IMO.

There are some good nursing bras around - the best ones looks wise are underwired like those by Anita.

HazleNutt · 27/12/2013 20:47

Anita underwired might work, but careful, they don't do double letters, so you have to go up several sizes.
Or buy a normal bra and convert yourself, easy to do.

KatyPeary · 27/12/2013 20:52

Oh god get a decent bra. It makes all the difference! You'll feel much better. Well, I suppose I should say, I felt much better, and it made a world of difference to me, having a decent bra and some bit of a visible waist. I used the Anita underwired ones too. Tho if you're a common size there are a few good brands out there now.

When I was bf I bought some bras from www.bras4mums.co.uk
TJ, who owns the business, is brilliant and can advise over the phone. I still buy from her now through one of her other websites as I'm blessed of norks and she really knows my size now!

trixymalixy · 27/12/2013 23:51

Anita underwired nursing bra. Made me look and feel about a stone lighter. Well worth it!

neolara · 27/12/2013 23:55

Hot Milk nursing bras were great. And they are currently having a sale.

JohnSnowsTie · 28/12/2013 09:28

Thanks folks - will defo look into your suggestions. I think the problem with my current one is it's not underwired and somehow doesn't keep them 'together'. I don't plan on giving up bfing anyone soon so I'd best invest.

Stupid question - I take it I need to re-measure myself?

Definitely get a new one!

SorrelForbes · 28/12/2013 10:03

Measure yourself in accordance to the advice here

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 28/12/2013 10:13

When I BF DD I wore nursing bras for 15 months until I stopped breastfeeding. I felt lumpen and unshapely, even when I had lost the baby weight (I'm a 28/30H, there's not a nursing bra in the world that could restrain my breasts)! It may sound overly dramatic but I felt terrible about myself.

I'm now BF DS (8 months) and I decided I couldn't wear nursing bras for that long again. I stuck to nursing bras for the first few weeks of constant feeding and then I went to bravissimo to get fitted for 'normal' bras.

They weren't cheap and I know that I'll need to fling them when I stop nursing as they are battered with being pulled about but, for me, the extra support and confidence I get is well worth it. The plus point is my waist looks tiny with my boobs up out of the way!

jennimoo · 28/12/2013 10:22

I measured myself and bought a few underwired ones online to try. I then converted one myself using bits of old nursing bras. I don't wear it all the time but it appears to take a dress size off and makes me feel almost normal!

NoComet · 28/12/2013 10:31

Once feeding was established and you have an older baby with some head control, it's easier to wear a normal non wired bra and just push it up out the way.

I hate clips, you need two hands to do them up. An ordinary bra is vastly easier in public, you just flick it up and down with one finger using baby as cover.

DD2 fed for so long she was perfect my capable of climbing in under an ordinary wired bra and telling me off for wearing it Grin

jennimoo · 28/12/2013 10:33

I don't think I could lift an underwired bra up over mine!

HazleNutt · 28/12/2013 11:51

if you can easily push bra up then it's way too big in the back. Have you seen the bra intervention threads here?

namechanger1979 · 28/12/2013 12:10

Rather randomly ive found some nice polish nursing bras online and on ebay. Search for lupoline. I find underwired fine if a decent fit ( if the bands small enough the underwiring doesnt dig in).

NoComet · 28/12/2013 12:25

Yes, and I've tried it and tighter just hurt. The cups might fit slightly better, but I want to take the thing off after an hour.

Anyway,BFing, especially extended BFing requires a certain degree of compromise over bra types and sizes and an acceptance that they are going to get pushed up, pulled down and generally abused.

It's a time for cheap and cheerfully M&S not your favourite £30-50 designer numbers.
