It did mine. I now get Geleration which has the same long-lasting, hard wearing finish but leaves my nails in much better nick.

Gumps · 23/12/2013 20:19

Only if you get fed up and pick it off like I do. If you get it taken off properly it's fine. You have to pay to have it taken off though.

MummyWeatherwax · 23/12/2013 20:19

Not for me, and before I had DD I wore it more or less continuously for ten months.
I think some people go a bit mental buffing the nail surface?

Creamycoolerwithcream · 23/12/2013 20:23

No it doesn't. Nail varnish always chips on the first day with me but I get 9 to 18 days with gel.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 23/12/2013 20:25

I can get my own of with 'get em of' remover dabbed on Cotton balls placed on nails and wrapped in foil.

Anyfuckerisnotguilty · 23/12/2013 20:30

Can't decide if I should get some stuff to do it at home so I can use it more than once or go to a salon

Yes in my experience. And because your nails look like shit after, you're more inclined to keep doing it to cover them up!

Creamycoolerwithcream · 23/12/2013 20:33

Do you mean buy one of those little heater machines?

burnishedsilver · 23/12/2013 20:36

It destroyed my nails. I have had it done 3 times, in 3 different salons, and had it professionally removed. Same disaster each time. Even my toe nails were destroyed. I thought toe nails were indestructible!

Anyfuckerisnotguilty · 23/12/2013 20:37

Yes a little uv lamp

Yes, if you do it continually without a break. I had it done four times in succession, getting two-and-a-half weeks out of each application, so over two months in all, and my nails took months to recover. The manicurist did admit that you should have gaps in between to let the nails breathe.

Have just today had it done again for over Christmas and it looks great but I'm planning to have it removed just after New Year and will give my nails a long break before doing it for the next special occasion.

ByTheSea · 23/12/2013 21:49

I've been having it done every 2-3 weeks for over a year and mine seem okay.

LouisaJF · 23/12/2013 21:49

I'm an Editor of a beauty magazine so feel free to ask away.

Shellac does not wreck your nails if applied AND removed professionally. There is no buffing of the nail plate so no danger of any damage. It can be gently and easily removed by a nail technician and the nail should be cared for at this time to prevent weakness

Nails are not living tissue and therefore do not breathe, this is a myth. It is not keeping them covered that causes problems, it is how they are cared for.

BaconAndAvocado · 23/12/2013 22:21

I've never had a problem with Shellac but I do use an excellent beautician who is meticulous.

Just had them done for Christmas, gorgeous and shiny Xmas Smile
