Yummy Mummy: What do you need to be one?

Just curious.

Do you need Boden clothes, a 4x4, designer shades and the latest mulberry bag or is it enough to be groomed and comfortable in your own skin?

Discuss.

There is one mother at ds's school who I would describe as a yummy mummy and she just looks classy to me. She is quite short and podgy but her hair although very unfussy is a lovely long layered bob with tasteful highlights and she wears really comfortable looking but stylish clothes that suit her.

There are other tall skinny mothers in tight clothes that just look like they're trying too hard.

I thought it was positive! Still a stereotype, but at least a nice one..

MILF is a term that comes from American Pie (the movie) and translates to Mom I'd Like To F... that makes me want to vomit, have been called that before..

VeniVidiVickiQV · 20/07/2006 20:16

Cheese.

Fastasleep · 20/07/2006 20:17

Whoops computer went weird! Way lagged behind everyone else now

OppressedLiberalPinko · 20/07/2006 20:17

Are you ok, southeastastra?

Piffle · 20/07/2006 20:18

From pure spec I would say
designer shades
perfect hair
light but perfect makeup
manicured nails
fake tan
Boden/Jigsaw/Toast/Coast clothes
baby in petit bateau or similar continental outfits.
Bugaboo
4 x 4 or conversely Toyota Prius (esp celebs)
designer baby bag from oi oi

southeastastra · 20/07/2006 20:18

yes this riles me up!

OppressedLiberalPinko · 20/07/2006 20:20

Because it is insulting? I agree, if so. Milf is v objectifying and yummymummy just pukesome, imo. Both are crap stereotypes which don't encourage anyone to look at the persona behind the facade.

BettySpaghetti · 20/07/2006 20:21

To be a yummy mummy I think you need:

personal trainer
stylist
hair and make-up person
chef
nanny
cleaner/housekeeper
.............

Fastasleep · 20/07/2006 20:22

Everyone puts everyone into pigeon holes on first impressions to some extent though, it's an unavoidable part of our society.

southeastastra · 20/07/2006 20:22

they are indeed OppressedLiberalPinko - i despair of it all

expatinscotland · 20/07/2006 20:22

reasonably thin and well-groomed.

DontlookatmeImshy · 20/07/2006 20:26

It's a phrase that makes me cringe/want to vomit too.

I saw someone with a tea-shirt with the slogan written across her chest the other day. Barf.

southeastastra · 20/07/2006 20:34

i hate it

2OldSofty · 20/07/2006 20:43

Does the 'yum mum' have a baby that looks genuinely happy? We could all be designer dressed and immaculate make up, and have miserable children...especially if they've just sat on the designer shades and been sick on the Mulberry.
Is all the kit a power statement or a facade to hide insecurities?
