Hi, I am not sure exactly what to do next with my hair and wondered if you could give any advice.

I have hair which is 1) fine and 2) curly 3) going grey around the parting. Quite a few products that seem to work for other people's hair eg. argan oil, seem to have no impact on mine. Oil products seem to make the ends frizzy, strangely enough? I tried a yoghurt mask the other day and it made the top of my hair nice and shiny but did not do much for the ends.

I recently moved and need to find a new hairdresser. In the meantime I have been trimming my own hair using the MN haircut and doing the occasional 'nice and easy root touch up' to replenish the colour - it is now about four months since it was properly coloured. I previously had a loreal colour in a dark blonde/golden brown which is similar to my natural shade, but quite a bit of the underneath/sides is now my natural colour.

The ends seem quite brassy, although I have cut quite a bit off - is there anything I could do to strip them? I also have a few broken strands near the top - is this due to using a tangle teaser?

I feel reluctant to step back on to the treadmill of salon colours - what else could I use to improve the colour and the condition?

Would a semi-permanent in a blonde shade help to tone in the grey? What hair mask or treatment? I would quite like something I could do at home as tbh, i have never felt that salons cut my curly hair particularly well and feel reluctant to go through all the faff/expense.
Thanks for any tips.

Hey OP Smile

What colour is / was your hair naturally? How old are you? Do you definitely want to cover the grey, or would you be happy with growing it in, if you could improve the condition?

Oh sorry, you do say dark blonde. Another question, is it long, would you considering short?

I've started a thread about silicone build up, I'll try to link it to here.

The problem with most hair masks and Argan oils is that they coat your hair shaft in silicone and stop any moisture etc getting in. this could well be why your hair feels frizzier on the ends after using oils.

Try finding some silicone free products (poundland and savers) and a deep cleansing/ clarifying shampoo to get rid of some build up.
Someone on my thread recommended the tresemme deep cleanse that I just got in savers for £2.99 for a massive bottle.

Where do you live? I recently saw a new hairdresser in Birmingham who specialises in curly hair. The salon also use organic colour. I have hair that was dark brown but since it is now so grey I have had to go blonde. It was dry and frizzy too. Not only did I get a great cut, I was shown how to dry my hair to make it more curly. He also told me to stop using products with silicone in as they build up and stop hair absorbing moisture. He recommended the Bodyshop Rainforest range which I gave been using and my hair is now much less frizzy.

Here is an article about why silicone is bad for your hair. It sounds like you may have silicone build up so you might want to consider going silicone free.

I have fine wavy hair as well, it can be quite fragile. It sounds like the ends of yours are damaged - box dyes and a lot of commercial hair products are quite damaging (silicone and ammonia are two of the main culprits).

Some suggestions:

  • intensive hair conditioner, at least once a week. You can use plain olive oil, I use Lush Jasmine and Henna frizz eaze
  • leave in conditioner every time you wash your hair
  • try not to comb or brush your hair too much when wet, just finger comb or broad tooth comb and be gentle
  • avoid putting heat on it

For the colour, aveda is quite gentle. Or organic colour systems if you want to go to a salon.

Thanks everyone, my hair is not feeling so neglected now!

I think the build-up remover is a good tip - I will look out for that Tresemme one.

Length - I would definitely want to keep the length as it takes me so long to achieve. I have a tall head, long neck, curly hair and my hair grows quite slowly so it takes aaaaggees....

Box dyes - my previous colours were all salon ones and it is just the last few months that I have been using the root touch up. But it does seem to have contributed to the problem....

I have always been a low user of products and use Body Shop rainforest shampoo - however I have run out of conditioner recently and have been using odds and ends of other things, so maybe that is a simple answer.

Scarletohello - I think I saw your other thread about the Birmingham salon. Definitely of interest. Was there a curl-cream that you recommended there?

Aveda products are excellent and there's a be curly range that people speak highly of.

To remove build up, use fairy liquid. Really!
