Lush henna

Does anybody use this?

Have started noticing some very done grey hairs over the last few weeks. I have dark black/brown hair and don't really fancy an expensive trip to the salon every few weeks and would rather use something more natural in my hair. Plus my hair is very thick and grows fast so I need to be able to do it myself.

Is this any good? Reviews seem a bit mixed. I like the idea of a violet tone as well but is it going to cover greys?

Thanks

Don't bother and get packs of henna powder - either from an Indian supermarket if there's one near you, or off ebay. Dirt cheap. Just mix with hot water and a bit of lemon juice and leave on, before shampooing off.

Henna is quite messy, and for it to really take it needs to get quite hot, so it's not something for a quick and easy dye job. Lush henna does leave you with hair in lovely condition, but I found it made my greys go orangey.

I have very dark brown hair with an alarmingly increasing amount of grey. I mix Lush's brun and noir hennas which gives a dark glossy colour without the reddish tint. Grey coverage is reasonable, would probably be better if I left it on for longer and was a bit more methodical in my application. Have just bought some Aveda black malva conditioner in the hope it'll prolong the henna effect. I do think the Lush henna is gives a better colour and condition than others I've tried.

I say no. Henna is a big commitment (you should not use any form of chemical dye on top of it. If you want to change colour, you need to grow it out) and you need to know how to do it properly. I henna'd my hair for a few years.

The Lush stuff looks very bad, difficult to use and has pretty awful reviews. A lot of people seem to say it fades, which henna should NOT do. Read this. All of it. It's about how to henna properly:

planet-paula.hubpages.com/hub/Henna-Your-Hair-as-told-to-me-by-an-Arab-woman

I did all of that except the walnut thing (have since read it can be harmful anyway, even though it produces a more intense colour). I used Indian or Pakistani henna in a tube bought from a grocer.

BTW proper henna smells like horseshit not 'dried leaves' Grin. Dried leaf smell indicates it's not proper henna. It also should come in one colour: RED (though the paste is green). If it ain't red it ain't henna.

The Lush description also smells of horseshit, but for different reasons.

If you can't go through the rigmarole of a proper henna dye, you may as well use usual chemical dyes. I do now. (LIVE by Schwartzkopf, they do some nice violets and reds and it covers grey well).

Incidentally, those pretend hennas (like the Lush one seems to be) can be just as harmful to skin and hair as chemical dyes, if not more so.

I've used it for around a year now. It covers my grey hair well(I use a mix of two parts marron to one part noir). The slightly different smell that the Lush henna has in comparison to basic henna is from added oils etc.

It does take a bit of getting used to doing it, if you've been used to normal hair dyes, but it's worth the effort IMO.

AgathaF · 17/12/2013 07:25

Just to add, my hair colour hasn't faded using the Lush henna. Perhaps those who find it does weren't using it properly?

mirpuppet · 17/12/2013 08:22

hennaforhair is a good website to find out more.

There is a forum where people share their recipes and results.

I have used Lush henna but went back to using henna followed by indigo as I wasn't fond of the oils in the Lush henna.

LittleTulip · 18/12/2013 09:00

Great thanks all.

Seems it needs to stay on the hair for a long time.

Every now and again I put it on in the evening and go to bed with it on (wearing a shower cap and a beanie hat over the top to keep it all in!), but generally I leave it for around three hours for good coverage and a lovely deep colour. I just put it on, cover as above and get on with something else that needs doing in the house for the time it's on, so it's no problem having it on for a while.

BitchyFestiveFace · 19/12/2013 08:12

I've used it several times. Messy and time-consuming, but does leave hair in lovely condition. Colour-wise I've found it varies! Sometimes it's been noticeable and strong, other times I couldn't detect much colour at all, although admittedly, I have very dark hair with little grey so most dyes generally don't show up except in strong sunlight.

I would use it again (have been meaning to for a while, in fact), but I need to set a day aside, really.
