Angora and rabbit cruelty

ShreddedHoops · 16/12/2013 13:44

So apparently H and M have ceased all production of clothes with angora due to the release of a video showing angora rabbits being basically what amounts to being skinned alive for their fur Sad

Zara have no plans to stop selling angora products, which is pretty crap - they are under pressure to.

I had some angora stuff on my sales wishlist from Cos - not any more.

Sky news article has the video (don't watch if squeamish) (it doesn't auto play, so you don't have to watch it!) and info on what shops have currently suspended angora stuff.

There's a petition to persuade Zara to stop using angora here

It's terrible especially when there are ways to get the fur without causing the rabbits any pain. Yes it takes longer which in turn would push up prices but I wouldn't care about higher prices if it means the animals aren't suffering Sad

ihatethecold · 16/12/2013 14:11

Apparently Stella McCartney has just stopped using angora.
What a hypocrite.

HappyGirlNow · 16/12/2013 17:29

I've just returned 2 recently purchased angora jumpers to Zara because of this. I told the girl in the shop why but she didn't seem aware of the publicity around this.

AgathaF · 16/12/2013 18:06

I'm so glad that the shops are finally catching on to this, albeit because of publicity and pressure.

I so wish the same would happen for down/feather products - coats, duvet, pillows. Dreadfully cruel.

SoloXantiaClaws · 16/12/2013 18:14

It seems to be China every time :(

WowOoo · 16/12/2013 18:26

Thanks for the petition link. Good news that Topshop has stopped producing angora items.
There was a thread about this before and I watched the video whilst wearing an angora jumper. Shock

My 2 jumpers were made in China. I stupidly thought as they were quite pricey, there'd be no cruelty involved.

At least there are lots of alternatives. I certainly won't be buying angora again.

I did find out that my coat was made ethically and that down in pillows from John Lewis uses feathers that are a by product.

HelloBoys · 16/12/2013 18:27

Maybe we should boycott china fullstop re this what a disgusting practice but the more shoppers protest and boycott the more hopefully china et al will stop being cruel to animals.

WowOoo · 16/12/2013 18:33

It would be a huge challenge to boycott China full stop.
For a small start: My iPhone - designed in California, produced in China.

Today's Guardian

TSSDNCOP · 16/12/2013 20:10

Mad as she is, this is the sort of thing Liz Jones is talking about when she writes that you don't get cheap fashion without there being animal or human rights being violated somewhere.

Someone somewhere in the fashion company has a copy of a certificate from a supplier bona fiding the excellent treatment of these bunnies and that they're willingly unzipping their own fur so a jumper can be initially made for c£1.

It's bullshit and if you think it's not you're potty.

Theoldhag · 16/12/2013 20:57

Thank you Shred I am thankful that you have highlighted this barbaric and cruel practice done in the name of fashion. I first became aware of this about 13 years ago when my dsis went to an angora 'farm' in New Zealand, never bought anything with this 'material' ever since.

There is no need for abuse, ever.

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2013 21:18

Oh, how horrible. Sad Good to know about John Lewis pillows, however.

Thank you for highlighting this. I will avoid.

RevoltingPeasant · 16/12/2013 21:33

Oh my God. That video, linked on The Guardian page, just made me cry. That poor animal screaming so pathetically.

I don't think I own anything angora but I definitely will not buy now.

Does anyone know if mohair is okay?

SoloXantiaClaws · 16/12/2013 22:44

Mohair is shorn from an Angora Goat and is nothing like Angora Rabbit.

SoloXantiaClaws · 16/12/2013 23:01

Sorry, I should say that an Angora goat grows a fleece like a sheep and is shorn just like a sheep. It is not hurt or harmed to my knowledge during the process.

HelloBoys · 17/12/2013 10:47

well you can boycott China for their fashion products and I for one will be doing this.

also protests are a good way to go and any charities that support the stopping of such cruelty.
