Uniqlo is excellent for lightweight jackets that are super warm and you won't find comparable quality anywhere else for such reasonable prices.

I was going to say Uniqlo but Grumpy has beat me to it. My dh has one and likes it because it is very lightweight and not bulky.

Have looked at uniqlo but compared to performance makes like rab, montane , TNT I wonder how they compare?

Uniqlo aren't proper performance jackets but are fine for just wearing out to the shops.

Hmm, we live by the coast, lots of beach and country walks, it's very windy here that's why I was thinking more of performance makes.

My husband has been looking for one for a while. We have an outdoorsy hobby and need something beyond what Uniqlo can offer. He has been dithering but I think he is going with one of the thicker North Face ones. He really liked one in Timberland, but couldn't find it in stock in his size anywhere.

I ended up buying a ski jacket from Burton last year for the same purpose. it's not very thick (it's not down-filled) but incredibly warm. Being wind proof makes a huge difference.

So I think you are right to stick with the technical brands.

I also think it is worth spending a bit of money on. The jacket my husband is looking to replace is a down-filled technical brand and has just started to go a bit thin after a decade of regular use.
