DD wrecked hair by over-dyeing. Any tips for repair/help, please.

DD has been obsessed recently with having blonde hair. She particularly wants to achieve a platinum blonde look. She has used various dyes in the past, but the one she persuaded me to use on her hair yesterday was l'Oreal Preference Extreme Platinum. She has very strong, thick hair, but it appears very damaged now. She admits now that this was the third time that it has been dyed in three weeks.

She hasn't been able to comb/brush it as it appears that clumps of hair are coming out. She used the conditioner after the dye, as usual, then I told her to use loads of the same conditioner again. Hair is still very brittle.

Does anyone have any tips on how to repair this? Or any advice you can give at all would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

You could try Argan oil but I would take her to a professional tout suite. She's probably going to have to have quite a bit chopped off [sister did the same thing]
If there is a hairdressing college nearby it might be a way of dealing with it more cheaply as a case study in fixing home hair disasters?

Ojon restorative shampoo and conditioner?

Or high street John Frieda repair is meant to be good.

RescueCack · 13/12/2013 15:56

I did the same. I slathered it in coconut oil, it was still very thin and fragile but this stopped the stretchy disintegration (boak). I finally fixed it for good with henna. It totally rebuilt the hair shaft. I do have red hair forever now though.

Overbleached hair

IloveJudgeJudy · 13/12/2013 16:58

Thank you for all the replies. We have also looked online, but this is a much more trustworthy site, we feel.

We are going with coconut oil in the first instance. I already had some argan oil spray that she's just used. She's not touching her hair at all atm.

If the coconut oil doesn't work, then there are loads of (very expensive) John Frieda and Redken hair products that others have written about.

I'll get back to this thread if I remember in about a week's time to let you know how she got on.

She's also just shown me a video on Youtube of a girl who wants to show people how to curl their hair, whose hair just breaks and burns off when she curls it around the curling tongs Shock.

She will have to have it cut off eventually. I over processed mine (but not even that much) and had to brazen it out to get some growth at the roots then went for a pixie cut.

Feels much better now(!)

I did use redken extreme shampoo and conditioner, but it's not a miracle product.
With bleached hair, it's so porous you have to try and put some colour back in to stop it snapping. You also need protein, but not too much- it will make it brittle.

When you wash it, it will stretch (and break!) so wash gently, dry gently, no straightening or curling etc

er1507 · 13/12/2013 20:37

if her hair is damaged to the point of it being really stretchy and looks a bit like chewing gum then she will 100% need to have it cut. once the hair is damaged like that there is absolute no way for it to be repaired. if its just a bit dry and frizzy then a little trim and a good shampoo and treatment set will help. Joico Kpak range is fantastic.

nicelyneurotic · 13/12/2013 21:56

Your poor DD. I also recommend the joico hydrate range. I would also look into a nanokeratin treatment for her hair. They are great for rebuilding the hair and healing damage.

BerryBlast · 14/12/2013 08:14

I found the Joico K pak range very good - my hair was awful after a combination of dyeing it and being in the sun - not a miracle cure (only gradually having it trimmed worked on damaged hair) but it did help. Found the Joico K pak intensive conditioner (used once a week) very good too. Poor DD Sad can feel for her.

foolssilver · 14/12/2013 09:26

Oh dear, I've been there! After 7 ish years of professional bleaching to get the platinum look my hair just gave up and snapped off in big chunks.

There unfortunately is so no quick fix but things I found helped were horse conditioner with protein in it, nano keratin treatments and either joico or pureology hydrate ranges. Redken antisnap also is good.

It's a nightmare but be persistent

perplexedpirate · 14/12/2013 09:29

Coconut oil. Cheap as chips and very effective.
Leave on overnight for deep conditioning.

sewingandcakes · 14/12/2013 09:36

I've done this a couple of times, and ended up with frazzled hair. I found that using Aussie 3 minute miracle reconstructor and leaving it in for ages helped. She'll probably need a trim too, and should avoid dying her hair until it's grown out. Henna dye should be ok though.
