Would you buy someone make up as a present?

My DIL, early thirties, wears a bit of makeup but not much, usually very cheap brands because she hasn't got loads of money to spend on herself. Could I risk buying her some make up or would I just get the products / colours wrong and waste the money?

Would love some advice please? Smile

I bought my friend a Dior Lip Glow and she loved it, said it was her best gift!

You can get the Lancome mascara pack at John Lewis- I know because I've just bought it- very good value as the mascara alone is usually £22.

Having said that, I wouldn't buy make up for anyone unless I knew exactly what they used and it was a ' replacement'.

Maybe something like a facial at a Clarins spa with deemable voucher or something? or a spa day?

Or just a department store voucher with the stern words- 'this is for yourself, not for the house'.

Unless you can sneak a peek in her make up bag, I wouldn't go for foundation as it has to be a perfect match, but I personally would be thrilled if my MIL got me something like a Bobbi Brown palette - her tones are lovely and seem to suit everyone even if some look scary bright before they are applied. I think luxury make-up items are gorgeous gifts and if she doesn't spend on herself but clearly enjoys a bit of make-up then it's a winner.
She's lucky to have you :)

One of my best ever presents years and years ago was an small-ish urban decay palette. It had a broad selection of colours in it.
I wish someone would get me that for a gift again, i would absolutely adore it...
I saw a gift box type thing in Boots the other day with a selection of benefit make up, their best sellers including porefessional and the they're real mascara. Something like that, or a palette would be a great gift, even if you don't know the persons colours.
