I'm a winter - but have a neutral skin tone?

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 18:03

Have done my colours myself using charts on Pinterest (Colour Me Beautiful I think since it takes hair/skin/eyes into perspective) and am fairly obviously a winter (Anne Hathaway type colouring). However my skintone is neutral, not cool or warm - I can wear both cool and warm toned makeup as long as lipsticks are vivid and I stay away from browns and beiges. Am I still a winter?

If you need a bright lippy to give a lift then that suggests the foundation tone is wrong. I was told that if you need to 'up' the blusher or colours of lippy when wearing certain colours ( clothes) then the clothes are not the right colour.
What you say is a bit muddled! Neutral is neither cool nor warm- it's a mix of each. I'm neutral too and do use pink or yellow foundations but neither is perfect.

I like the Colour Me Confident gradings because they aren't seasons, they are warm, cool, soft, light , with gradings for deep, light, etc etc.

what colour are your eyes, hair and skin?

Gillybobs · 08/12/2013 18:30

I've been draped as a spring by house of colour and I also have a neural complexion (I think I'm bright spring which is spring leaning into winter, so it makes sense I'm cooler than a typically warm, true spring). I think it would be worth your while readin the 12 blueprints website, it's very very flowery in its style of writing but it's a mine of information on this stuff

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 18:30

I don't wear foundation, so it's not wrong Smile I don't need a bright lipstick to give my face a lift, just that I look horrendous in pastels and this extends to my face. Doesn't matter what clothes I'm wearing.

I don't understand what you say by being muddled - do you mean I shouldn't be able to wear either cool or warm shades? Because I can wear both. I just mean that I can wear an orangey red lipstick and a blue red lipstick, and both look good.

Hair is dark brown (almost black), skin very pale beige with freckles in summer, eyes dark hazel. I look best in Winter colours eg bright red, royal blue, navy, black, grey, forest green. Have tried Autumn colours but look terrible.

Worth reading this?

varigatedivy · 08/12/2013 18:47

sorry- didn't mean to sound rude re. muddled. I just thought that the whole point of being colour matched was to make sure you know whether you are warm, cool or neutral which applies to skin tone rather than the clothes. If you are talking about clothes then that's why I'm confused- thought you meant foundation.

Us HoC Winters have to wear bright lippy or we look like eyes without a face

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 18:56

Ahh sorry for the confusion varigatedivy! Yes I was talking about clothes. You didn't seem rude, I was just a bit puzzled!

And yes, I have a soft mauve lipstick which is Winter-friendly as far as coolness, but just not deep/bright enough for my face. Tomato red (Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in Neon Red is wonderful) on the other hand looks fab.

Have heard that Winters look good in icy pink lipstick, like a 60s style?

OP posts:
MissScatterbrain · 08/12/2013 20:03

Winters tend to look best in carmine/scarlet red, fuschia pink and burgundy lipsticks.

I am a HoC winter and I look shit in tomato red, ice pink and soft mauve lipsticks Confused

When being diagnosed by HoC, your hair is covered so your hair & eye colours are not that relevant - its all about your skin tone.

Flangeofmingetown · 08/12/2013 20:11

Look at the palette for Bright Winter. It leans towards Spring so you can still work a lip that pulls warm as long as it is bright enough. The brightness is the most important thing.

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 20:12

Haven't tried ice pink lipstick but it is supposed to be good on Winters. My soft mauve lipstick doesn't look particularly good on me, I don't wear it - it was just a cheapy one to try and see if I could wear softer coloured lipsticks. Tomato red looks great though and is in the list of best lipsticks for Winters in Colour Me Beautiful, however.

I do also look good in carmine/scarlet red, fuchsia pink and burgundy, though. That's my problem, there are very few bright lipsticks that don't suit me! Coral looks as good as a blue-toned fuchsia does.

I suppose the answer is to just wear what suits me Grin

Ooh flangeofmingetown you posted as I was typing - Bright Winter lip colours look perfect, thanks! Those are just the colours that look good on me.

Ice pink and mauve looks meh on bright/ clear winters.

KosherBacon · 08/12/2013 20:15

I'm a neutral winter! Join us on the winter boards. There are a few of us who are neutral toned- we end up being mostly sultry winters (deep/ dark winter according to the 12 blueprints link above). She describes them as winter with a spoonful of chocolate stirred in.

HoC get the drapes in your colour family and rate them against you, whereas CMB don't do that.

BeginnerSAHM · 08/12/2013 20:17

Hi - you must be a 'clear' then. (Clear is the dominant trait for you, using the CMB system.). So you are either clear and warm (and a spring in HoC) or clear and cool (and a winter in HoC). Both would look better in brighter/vivid colours than pastels and muted colours. Do you look better in 'Kerry/Kelly green' or 'Emerald green'. (Any idea what the difference is?!?) Tough call if you don't have tops in those colours!! Try a clear tomatoey red (warm or spring) vs a clear pinky dark red (cool or winter).

I'm like Gilly - a 'spring' but not that warm and am 'clear and warm' in the CMB system.

Read the '12 blueprints' thing like Gilly suggested!! It might help Confused. Or not...

Flangeofmingetown · 08/12/2013 20:18

Sounds like you have it figured x Pinterest has some fantastic pinboards to help see how it works and some great lipstick recommendations.

MissScatterbrain · 08/12/2013 20:19

CMB uses a different system to that at HoC - I could be wrong but I was given the impression that CMB crosses over seasons a lot more. CMB clients get given swatches of colours but these are not rated so people do not know which colours are their best ones. From what you say it sounds like CMB winters are different to HOC winters.

I don't know any HOC winters who can do coral lipsticks - under their system, if you can do coral, you are likely to be a spring? Confused

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 20:27

I can wear black, though, and I didn't thing Springs could? I am 100% Winter in terms of clothes. I can't wear coral clothes, but can wear coral lipstick for some reason. Also yes it seems like the CMB and HoC systems are totally different - very confusing!

BeginnerSAHM - can I not be clear and neutral? I can wear both tomato red and pinky dark red. Also according to CMB I am not a Clear Winter because of my eye colour. Thinking that HoC makes more sense now...

TBH I don't believe in all the colour analysis crap. You already seem to know what suits you anyway, Dear OP! This is a good thing. If you're looking for lipstick that's paler and you like that very tomato-y red (which is a great colour) maybe a pale coral pink would be better than an icy blue pink.

Seriously what do you all do when all the clothes in the shops are based on the Pantone fashion colours and none of them are 'your' colours? Do you have a mental crisis or something because you can't work things out for yourself?

Prepare thyselves for Pantone's spring colours:

www.pantone.co.uk/pages/fcr/Default.aspx?season=spring&year=2014&pid=3

Flangeofmingetown · 08/12/2013 20:34

There is a lot of bunkum about bright/clears have jewel like eyes. Some do,some don't. If you look at a picture of Liv Tyler (always quoted as a clear/bright winter) she is often in a clear coral/orange red lip. Bright Winters are 20% Spring.

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 20:38

Thanks look. I do think colour analysis should be more of a guide than absolutes, like MBTI analysis.

As for coral lipstick, it does have to be a pink coral unless it's a very vivid orangey coral - so I could wear No7 Gay Geranium as it's very bright, but not a coral that's as orange but less bright IYSWIM. Bourjois used to do a PERFECT pink coral but it was discontinued a while ago. Looked great one me especially if I was wearing green clothing. Cannot wear pastel clothing at all though.

Pantone's spring colours look quite hard for me to wear! Only Paloma and Dazzling Blue Sad Freesia is too mustardy. Not massively keen on purple. I love Pantone's colours of the season/colour of the year though, I am slightly obsessed with Pantone. /saddo

here

QueenCadbury · 08/12/2013 20:41

It's impossible to know what you are without being draped. I'm a sprinter winter so need to wear all the bright colours from the winter pallete. My colouring is fairly neutral. But I definitely need the bright lipsticks to look my best.

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 20:56

Hmmm flange I would wear something a bit less of a spice/brick colour (although it's possibly just my monitor). Maybelline Neon Red is only just warm. Also the red Revlon balm stain (the chubby stick type, it's called Romantic) which on my lips is like a sheer version of MAC Ladybug, what I would call a strawberry red.

Queen sounds like me. I can wear black, grey and navy but try not to wear a whole outfit of them. White not ivory. Need makeup to wear black which is how someone described a Bright Winter on a link posted here which sounds right. I don't think I wear anything but bright lipstick, they look by far the best on me.

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 08/12/2013 20:59

Agree it's hard to tell without the draping. I am a sultry winter so I look better in the deeper more burnished colours, ie burgundy, navy, forest green etc than the brights like QueenC.

LittleBabyPigsus · 08/12/2013 21:02

If you know broadly what suits you, is HoC worth it?
