Dry horrible hair - help!

I have dark wavy hair (coloured as I went grey very early!) and it is a mess. Frizzy, dull & dry. I try to use minimal shampoo about twice a week and have switched to Aussie and also am using a frizz-fighting conditioner and treatment mask from Aussie. This seems to have made it worse. I don't blow dry, but will use a curling iron or straighten every couple of days - leaving it natural is not an option. Please tell me what to buy, make or do to make it nice, shiny and less horrid looking!

I had similar hair and argan oil is working miracles on it!!

I tried coconut oil but didn't get on with it.

I apply a blob of the oil to clean and dry hair concentrating on the ends then tie it up in a twisty bun. After an hour or two I untie it and have smooth and lovely waves Smile .

Sounds like classic silicone build up. Find a couple of shampoos / conditioners you like and rotate them to prevent buildup. Use a clarifying shampoo or Head and Shoulders once a week. And soak hair in olive oil overnight once a week too. Avoid using styling products like serums that will contain loads of silicone.

Pancakeflipper · 08/12/2013 00:20

I have similar hair. Once or twice a week I condition it for about 30mins. It lasts a couple of days looking good. The other times I use argali or macadamia oil.
Try to avoid hair dryers if possible but if left natural it can look 'heavy'.

Pancakeflipper · 08/12/2013 00:22

I currently use Liz Earle hair products and currently looking glossier. But my scalp reacts to various chemicals.

Buggeritsraining · 08/12/2013 08:00

Similar hair here too, wants to be wavy and I blow dry/straighten/babyliss big hair most days. Also dye every 4 weeks. I basically condition loads, use a serum on hair (when wet seems to work better than when dry) - either aveda smoothing fluid or awapuhi styling treatment oil. The best thing I found lately is coconut oil recommended here - leave on while hoovering for about 40 mins for supersoft hair. Works for me but am thinking of having a brazilian blow dry too.

Here's a good article about why you should avoid silicone based products. I was recently advised by my new hairdresser to use Body Shop Rainforest range as they have no sulphates or silicones and my hair is looking much better!

My hair is also very dry. I have tried build up removal shampoo, but i think it made it even more dryer. ATM i am using baby shampoo and a very rich conditioner and after my hair is dry i use a bit of coconut oil as a live in conditioner. Another DIY winner for me is an egg yolk mixed with olive oil for an hour before washing.

I have wavy hair they goes frizzy and needs straightening or curling.

My hair has improved 100% by following the curly girl method, no silicones (I use boots botanical shampoo and Tresseme naturals conditioner).

Then I plop my hair (lots of videos on YouTube), it's basically wrapping your hair in a cotton tea shirt to prevent frizz.

My hair is looking and feeling so much better.

kittysaysmiaow · 08/12/2013 10:17

What colour is your hair? I have very similar hair to you and am dark-I've recently started using aveda black Malva shampoo in order to reduce brassy tones caused by colouring-it has really improved the condition of my hair and made it much glossier and healthy looking. Moroccan oil also helped for me.

kittysaysmiaow · 08/12/2013 10:18

Oops sorry just seen you said you were dark! Definitely think about black Malva, you can get a huge bottle from look fantastic.com for around £20

lightningstrikes · 08/12/2013 10:37

Thank you everyone so much! I am currently using a Paul Mitchel serum, so will stop that. Plan of attack is to look for silicon and sulphate free shampoo and conditioner (thank you for the recommendations) and purchase some coconut or moroccan or argan oil for deep conditioning. Will also investigate 'plopping'. My hair thanks you all Grin

This works wonders - if link doesn't work it's Osmo deep conditioning treatment, you can get it in Sally's

Oh and l'oreal ever pure is great, I use the pink bottles which is for colour treated hair

Saurus72 · 08/12/2013 19:00

Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo, 3 Minute Miracle conditioner followed by Toni and Guy leave in conditioner. I have naturally curly hair that is highlighted (not a stupid amount) and mine went like straw a couple of months ago. The producers above have really helped, as gas switching from washing my hair every day to every other day.

monopoly123 · 08/12/2013 19:06

I've got thick coarse dry hair that's prone to frizz and bushiness. My hair has been revolutionised by mane & tail shampoo and conditioner - it's really made a huge difference to battling the frizz & bushiness!

Saurus72 · 08/12/2013 19:28

Producers? Products Hmm

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 08/12/2013 19:40

I use coconut oil on my face and it is amazing, but it did nothing for my hair. Olive oil has been good, and also smooshing an avocado into my hair and leaving it on for twenty minutes or so. Both need quite a lot of washing out after!

NiSaBula · 08/12/2013 19:41

I occasionally use henara deep conditioning wax (bought it in poundstretcher). It's more like a thick conditioner than a wax, leave it in for half an hour, then wash out. I still have to straighten, but my hair feels lovely and 'swishy'. My hair is naturally part grey, but dyed, course and wavy/frizzy.

Aussie stuff made my hair go dry as straw, and I've heard others say the same. Never touched the stuff again.

Try - Loreal Absolut Repair shampoo, conditioner, masque and repairing spray, it's by far the best for dry hair that I have found. (And I tried a lot of different products).

Posters recommend different oils - I use coconut oil left in overnight or all day.

Using those and John Frieda Frizz-Ease I've not experienced too much silicone.

Pancakeflipper · 08/12/2013 23:20

Aussie stuff I found to dry my hair more and I cannot figure out why/how. And I thought it would be the answer to my hair prayers.

BeautyBrains · 09/12/2013 01:24

As others have mentioned, a sulphate and silicone free routine can do wonders.

I use L'Oreal EverSleek Smoothing and Moisture Shampoo & Smoothing treatment (the conditioner is crap). As a leave-in serum, I use Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense (Black bottle) which contains all natural oils and no silicone. Since I started this routine, my hair condition has improved dramatically. It always feels soft, smooth and looks shiny and healthier. Get rid of the silicones and sulphates!
