How do people afford Mulberry bags?

There were two girls on either side of me on the tube last night each with a Mulberry bag and both in their 20s. And there are often threads on here about which one to buy.

Just wondering how people can manage to spend £800-1200 on a bag? I consider myself quite well off and couldn't justify it.

I agree, I feel quite well off until I see how many people have those bags. I just assume that they may have different priorities (No house mortgage, car, holiday)

BunnyLebowski · 05/12/2013 14:11

No idea.

I wouldn't buy one if I was a millionaire. They're incredibly dull and overrated Confused .

I have friends who have a massive selection of expensive designer bags, but they all still live at home and don't really have any responsibilities except for running cars, so they all have loads of disposable income (I'm in my early twenties). Oh to live that lifestyle! Although I'd probably rather spend the money on something useful or save it for a house deposit...

Bowlersarm · 05/12/2013 14:12

I have a mulberry bag. Am in late 40s though. I'm not overly into handbags. I always have a Mulberry bag which I use until it falls apart, then I get another one from DH for the next birthday or Christmas present, which ever comes first. One lasts me about three years, approx.

nancerama · 05/12/2013 14:13

When I had a job and no child, I used to buy one a year in the sale when they were 50% off. I never spent more than £300 on one though.

It actually worked out better value that buying a rubbish £25 from Accessorise once a month.

Couldn't even afford an Accessorise one these days Hmm

Fakes. Disposable income. Fairly well off?

Bowlersarm · 05/12/2013 14:13

Why is it deeply depressing, Po?

In my 20s - job, but no mortgage, car loan or child care to pay - I would spend that kind of money on a bike. Or two. I had no other pressures on my money.

NewChoos · 05/12/2013 14:16

I like Mulberry bags. I have a mortgage and 2 very expensive children plus a gadgety DH...
I save up birthday/christmas money or just splurge every now and then (also like Anya/Coach). I buy relatively few things and so don't mind paying more for things I like.

Rooble · 05/12/2013 14:17

I think the question isn't how do they afford them, but why? Why waste all that money on a bag when you could spend it on a holiday instead? Or a multitude of frocks? Or fantastic nights out, theatre trips. Complete mystery to me :-)

OhBabyLilyMunster · 05/12/2013 14:17

Fakes!

MissMilbanke · 05/12/2013 14:19

Years ago they were relatively cheap.

I wouldn't dream of paying north of £800 for one today.

Ebay ia awash with cheaper imitations which I have to say do look like the real thing.

Bowlersarm · 05/12/2013 14:20

Rooble maybe a Mulberry handbag is as well as rather than instead of holidays, lovely frocks, theatre trips etc?

I hope this going to turn into a 'worthy' thread.

Does it really matter what people choose to spend their money on?

NewChoos · 05/12/2013 14:23

not going to…..

mumofthemonsters808 · 05/12/2013 14:30

I would love a Mulberry bag, but I'll never own one, well out of my price range.

Chivetalking · 05/12/2013 14:31

Possibly moody rather than gen-u-wine but I wouldn't know a Mulberry if it slapped me upside the head Grin

AngelaDaviesHair · 05/12/2013 14:32

It doesn't matter, but it is fascinating.

mrscumberbatch · 05/12/2013 14:35

If people genuinely like the bag then I don't have a problem with it, but if they're buying it because it's a mulberry then I hoick my judgey knickers up.

They're not even particularly good quality these days.

I feel sorry for the people who buy them thinking they'll still be worth money in xx years time. I reckon in 5 years these will be largely gone, forgotten and worthless.

Hollyandbooze · 05/12/2013 14:35

More money than sense

Stokey · 05/12/2013 14:36

Didn't mean to be worthy - just genuinely amazed.

But good point on the people who are living with their parents so get all their disposable income to themselves.

Massive mortgage, 2 kids in child care so I can work - never gonna happen!

NewChoos · 05/12/2013 14:37

Stokey - we are the same with mortgage and childcare, I just choose to spend a large part of my clothing budget on a bag every few years.
