Ski outfit suggestions

BoffinMum · 02/12/2013 22:24

I am size 20 on the bottom half and size 16-18 on the top half, and I am looking for a ski outfit that won't make me look any fatter than I am. I am a beginner so don't want to spend more than £100 for everything (I already have gloves, base layer, socks and goggles). Does anyone have any good ideas?

When are you going and how cold will it be? I hate being all padded and massive so last time (March) I wore tights/ski trousers but the layered vest/top/thin fleece/body warmer and looked and felt much better.

TK Maxx is best bet to start looking or eBay.

Financeprincess · 02/12/2013 22:28

Black ski trousers, fitted. The looser they are, the bigger you look! Also try to get a ski jacket that fits you round the middle as bulky jackets make you look bigger too. Ski clothing is a complicated business, as you have already identified!

BoffinMum · 02/12/2013 22:29

Christmas, and it will be pretty cold (Alps)
I will check out Ebay.

Are these trousers likely to be flattering? I've got a smaller waist than thighs. Vail women's ski pant

And what do you think to this jacket?

Aldi launch their ski stuff on Thursday.

Agree, go for dark, plain, streamlined. And a bright or fluffy hat to draw attention to your face.

SanityClause · 02/12/2013 22:34

Don't spend a lot of money - you might hate it!

Just kit yourself out as cheaply as possible (could you borrow some clothes?) and see if you like it.

Most people look a bit chunky in ski gear, anyway, except for the very tall thin people who look amazing in anything.

BirdyArms · 02/12/2013 22:34

Have you tried Decathlon, do you have one nearby? They have reasonably priced ski gear, jackets and trousers from £25 each and a good range of sizes. I think I'd be worried about whether a £25 jacket would be warm enough but this one for £50 looks good www.decathlon.co.uk/monaco-womens-ski-jacket-black-id_8306036.html. Ski stuff I have bought from Decathlon has all been fine.

Or otherwise try ebay. I think black trousers and a brightly coloured jacket is generally a good look to go for, especially if you are bigger on the bottom half.

Financeprincess · 02/12/2013 22:35

Yes to jacket, no to trousers (a bit bulky). I endorse the TK Maxx suggestion.

ChippyMinton · 02/12/2013 22:36

I like the 'illusion' detail on the side of the jackey, that will be flattering, I think.
Trousers look fine.

BoffinMum · 02/12/2013 22:38

How about these salopettes?

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 02/12/2013 22:38

That Decathlon jacket looks nice.

SanityClause · 02/12/2013 22:38

I x posted with your suggestions.

Those things look fine, and the fit of jacket will probably be quite flattering. Pretty colour, as well.

If you have a smaller waist, a belted jacket might look nice.

I love skiing, BTW, although I suck at it, and I hope you have a lovely time!

(And wear a helmet!)

BirdyArms · 02/12/2013 22:39

Really like the mountain warehouse stuff you linked to. Try not to worry too much about how you look. Most people don't look fantastic on the slopes and you definitely won't stand out.

ChippyMinton · 02/12/2013 22:40

No to stretchy pants, padded is better for beginners. Those Vail ones are fine, honestly Smile

Artandco · 02/12/2013 22:47

I dont think you can look good skiing!

It will be really cold at Xmas in the alps ( was -25 at the top last Jan and apparently had been colder) so def get decent clothing

The mountain warehouse stuff that friends brought last year kind of fell apart! As in each day bits of ski pants would unravel and break off!

BoffinMum · 02/12/2013 22:47

Tchibo have some great stuff but they don't post to the UK any longer

LaFataTurchina · 02/12/2013 22:48

This isn't really fashion advice but I would definitely get salopettes as opposed to trousers. Just to avoid the possibility of getting an inch of cold/wet back if you fall.

Tk maxx have loads of skiing stuff in, including some nice grey jackets that you could wear afterwards as well.

Have fun!

winklewoman · 03/12/2013 05:24

LaFataT, I was reading the thread and was just going to say "definitely get trousers as opposed to salopettes" when I got to your post. Salopettes are such a nuisance when you need to go to the loo, and provided your trousers have a nice high waist, OP, you should be OK and not have a snowy back, also many jackets have a 'snow skirt' inside which keeps you dry. Padded not stretchy, you will need the warmth and if it is really nippy you can wear long johns underneath. Do wear a helmet though. Sometimes ski hire shops lend you one for free along with your skis and boots.

Skilover · 03/12/2013 14:25

I think the pink jacket is lovely especially with the dark panel at the side which would be flattering - if you watched X factor the other week Sam Bailey looked amazing in a red outfit with black side panels...and love the plain black pants too. Also would definitely recommend a fluffy neck thingy to stop the cold air going down your front and I always wear a hooded thermal to pull up under my helmet for when it is really really cold. Just make sure you have lots of thin thermals to layer up and enjoy.

BoffinMum · 04/12/2013 08:40

I am thinking I might order that first outfit then, if people think I won't look too enormous.

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 04/12/2013 08:44

They seem to have free delivery and 20% off so it cost £75 for trousers, jacket, fleece and hat, which I can't help thinking is brilliant actually.

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 04/12/2013 08:44

I'll try to post a photo up when it all comes.

OP posts:
specialsubject · 04/12/2013 10:55

try to borrow from someone not in your ski group. The only no-no is white, only worn by stupid fashion victims as obviously it makes you less conspicuous.

pity C and A went bust...

winklewoman · 04/12/2013 11:26

Yes to fluffy neck thing as recommended by Skilover, absolutely indispensable. Easy to make actually, one metre of the stretchy fluffy stuff makes four.I keep our lot supplied with these homemade ones as they tend to get lost.
