How do you put on eye make-up? Need some ideas, please

I've been doing it the same way for 20+ years (the way Clinique showed me how to do it - creamy colour on first then something darker on outside edges/ crease & a light one swept under my eyebrows (all subtle!) then some eye-liner & mascara) and feel like old fashioned.

How do I learn how to do make-up nicely?

I am ok at shoving some eye shadow on & a bit of eye-liner in the morning before I go to work but for a night out or a weekend, it looks rubbish.

I always change my make up style a bit after having it done professionally for work, find it great for picking up tips and ideas that i wouldn't have necessarily thought if, you could buy a make up lesson either at a salon or some of the make up counters do them, like MAC.

My magic tip is to put sellotape (yes, really) on like in the picture, and then apply your eyeshadow. It gives you a lovely sharp edge, which looks great and dramatic if you go for the smokey eye look. It is also handy for applying liquid eyeliner and a bit of a cheat for beginners!

Another tip is to make sure your brows are lovely and groomed as it makes the world of difference, and would go for a highlighter like benefit high-beam just underneath, but you've already said that you use a light colour underneath (shimmery is probably best, as opposed to matte)

I also like to line my eyes with a kohl pencil in either brown or black before going smokey- it makes your eyeshadow look more intense and stay on longer. A dark purple/ plum colour would look lovely if your eyes are green or hazel.

Gold and pearlescent pink colours look stunning on blue eyes.

If you want to do something the next step up from a plain smokey eye, then you can go for the cut-crease look in different colours. There are tonnes of tutorials on Youtube (look out Queen of Blending I think her name is- she is fab). Another of my favourites is MissChievous?, especially her Arabian style eye make-up tutorials.

I'll stop harping on now. I love make-up.

Tracy, this sellotape thing. Where exactly do you put it? Harp away as this has fascinated me and I need inspiration for work xmas do this weekend Grin Thanks

TallulahBetty · 02/12/2013 22:36

Just realised you said like in the picture but i'm on my phone so can't see pictures Sad

tracypenisbeaker · 02/12/2013 22:40

Tallulah just at an angle towards your temple, where you would expect to see an eyeliner flick. It turns out really nice- when you peel away the tape after applying the eye-shadow it leaves a clean line with no speckles of fallout from the make-up brush iyswim. What I also do it blend a darker colour along the edge of the tape so it gives a graduated effect.

goodasitgets · 02/12/2013 22:41

Sellotape from corner of your lower lid line out diagonally sort of out towards eye brow - like an eyeliner flick

tracypenisbeaker · 02/12/2013 22:43

I gathered that you probably couldn't see the image- it's a big picture of an eye staring straight into your soul, so hard to miss Grin

goodasitgets · 02/12/2013 22:44

To add I often do two colours,
One in corner of eye, one outer edge
Or v plain eye makeup then a bright green/blue liner under eyes

Go mad - it washes off!

TallulahBetty · 02/12/2013 22:49

Ooh thanks both - sounds good! Will get practising before Friday Smile Thanks

goodasitgets · 02/12/2013 22:51

What colour eyes do you have? And hair?

TallulahBetty · 02/12/2013 22:59

Me? Or the OP?

(in case it's me Grin, I have brown hair with highlights and green eyes.)

goodasitgets · 02/12/2013 23:00

The OP Grin

(But MAC Coppering looks amazing on green eyes) Wink

TallulahBetty · 02/12/2013 23:04

Ha, thanks! Wink

As you were, OP (sorry for hijacking)

ZacharyQuack · 03/12/2013 01:10

If you try the sellotape trick, stick the tape to the back of your hand and remove it a couple of times first. This de-stickifies it a bit so that it is easier to remove from your face.

OP I do exactly the same as you ;-) MAC pretty much told me to continue doing the same, but in a C/V shape (am sure I also picked this up on pixiwoo) with the darker colour on the outer edges/crease. Updating for me is more about the colours I buy.
LOVE the sellotape idea - must try it!
As well as pixiwoo, I love Lisa Eldridge - she does mostly more conservative looks so good for work.

AskAQuestion · 04/12/2013 08:27

Thank you all. I replied but my post seems to have disappeared Confused

Hijack was helpful so don't worry! I have dark hair and browny-greeny eyes.

Will look at tutorials later, thankyou.

I agree, Lisa elridge has fab tutorials.

I use a make up forever cream eyeshadow #2 colour on her recommendation and it's brill, as it lasts all day. I use my finger to apply it. Easy peasy.
For evening I use a eye pencil near the lashes over the cream eyeshadow. Good to go.

goodasitgets · 04/12/2013 16:01

Oh OP with your eyes/hair, bronze/gold/copper colours would look fab or purples Smile
Red type coppers make greens eyes really stand out

BigPawsBrown · 04/12/2013 16:04

I think just a light nude on eyes and a sweep of liquid liner is very now, especially if paired with a good nude or red/pink/coral lip. I don't think the whole three colours of powdery eyeshadow is very in any more and I think it can be quite aging...

PepeLePew · 04/12/2013 21:04

I am an eye makeup klutz, but am having a lot of success with Rimmer Scandaleyes pencils which are very soft and creamy. I just whack it on all over the eyelid and blend with a brush, then finish with a line of dark eyeshadow applied with an angled brush above my eye instead of a pencil.

Also, I love the Chanel Illusion d'Ombre eyeshadows for going out - very easy to apply. But there's no sophisticated blending going on, I just slap it on.
