Shedding hair nonstop and sick of it

I have posted before about hair loss so apologies for posting again. I am just feeling so down about my constantly thinning hair. There are no real solutions as I apparently have female pattern loss. I am taking supplements and using Regain, not that it's helping.

It's just so hard seeing my formerly quite thick hair go very thin on a daily basis and feel and look rubbish, it is really affecting jy confidence. No idea what to do about the future as I'm only 38. Please help me put this in perspective. Thanks.

Have you had any blood tests? Anaemia? under active thyroid?

Naicecuppatea · 02/12/2013 21:52

Had them all Loony some time ago, no issues with them. Just don't know what to do really!

I feel your pain sweetheart. I used to blow dry my hair with the biggest round brush and had to do it in many sections. I don't even use a brush anymore. I was diagnosed with pattern hairloss also. Have been using minoxidil but to not avail. It's no worse tbf but its not better either. I used to panic and have real hardcore panic attacks. Not so much now. I am going to get me the nicest human hair wig. It's got to be better than going out everyday worrying over scalp showing, though tbf my hairloss ATM is, I have been told, mild. I can cover it well.
Hate it when the sun shines as its harder to hide.
Have a good haircut and highlightes, it will help. Ojon shampoo is very very good.

Naicecuppatea · 02/12/2013 22:35

Thanks Chipstick. Sorry you have been going through the same thing, it makes you feel very helpless. I will have a look at Ojon. I also dont use a brush, just a wide tooth comb.

I have this it's called Androgenic Alopecia.
Mine started 4 mths after the birth of my daughter & never stopped. That was 10 years ago. The dermatologist I saw recommended the Men's Rogaine foam as stronger than the female one. I couldn't afford to use the foam but my hair loss is all over.
I take zinc & a multivitamin but haven't find any other cure. Biotin & Silica is good for the hair.

Naicecuppatea · 03/12/2013 09:21

Thanks Megbeth. Can you please please give me some tips on how to deal with it emotionally! Does the shedding ever ease up? What sort of hairstyle do you have?

Don't have your hair long or all one length. Choppier hairstyles work best. Have hi lites and not one block colour. If its too dark the scalp is more noticeable. If its too blonde the scalp looks too pink. A blend of hi lites work. Swells the hair cuticles.

Naicecuppatea · 03/12/2013 11:33

Thanks again, my hair is medium brown but the trouble is I have quite gray roots which I have to colour, so highlights may be a problem. All one length and fairly long so a cut may help it look better.

OP you have my sympathy. I lost tons of hair while pregnant and for a long time after, which eventually stopped.

I was taking berocca and spatone which I think helped, but everyone is different and it may have been a coincidence. I also bought some clip in hair extensions and popped in a couple of inch wide sections to pad my hair out. Just four small ones make a massive difference.

My Mother also had this problem in the past and was helped by a homeopath. I know they get a hard time on mumsnet but it really did help her so don't knock it til you try it!

Megbeth · 05/12/2013 06:11

I have a bob that I'm growing out. I wear clip in extensions at the sides. I am naturally curly but have to dry it straight. I use GHD's on my hair to get it to look decent.
I have just started taking a multi vitamin + skin hair & nails. Zinc is supposed to help as well as silica & biotin.

WildThong · 05/12/2013 11:58

It's horrible isn't it. I have noticed several threads like this over the past year, I wonder if it is becoming more common or if women are just more aware of it these days? I don't remember my mums generation having these issues and she certainly had lovely thick hair all her life. Maybe it's our lifestyles, who knows, but I wish the medical profession would treat it more seriously. I started taking a supplement called Viviscal a few weeks ago. It contains Biotin. Too soon to say if there is any difference at all but my nails have definitely improved and this is a known benefit of Biotin so hopefully means something is improving.

Naicecuppatea · 05/12/2013 13:17

I think hair loss is definitely more common among women these days, I think it is probably a mixture of stress, environmental factors, diet and genetics.

Thank you to all who have posted. Thanks

Megbeth and nicelyneurotic, thanks for letting me know about extensions, they are definitely something to look into but I'm not sure they can cover up the thinning on the top. My hair loss is also all over but worse on the top.

A homeopath may be another idea...as I work in the medical field I feel a bit sceptical about it, but maybe worth a try.

I have tried biotin and viviscal without any luck really.

It's hormonal with me. Have you been checked for pcos? Pill helps me, dianette is the one they give.

Came off it last june for operation and because I'm hopeful we might go for dc 3 but the difference is really noticiable now. Awful, I hate it.

Naicecuppatea · 05/12/2013 15:29

I have been checked for PCOS, but don't seem to have it.

Sorry your hair has got worse since coming off Dianette (but glad it has worked well for you and hopefully will do again). Good luck for TTC no. 3.

The Dianette is used as it has a blocking effect on the testosterone &Androgen the male hormones. It treats oily skin, acne, excess hair in the body & female hairloss. I tried taking it, Yaz, Yasmin & Microgynon pill, Spirinolactone, Cyproterone but had to stop to due side effects & depression. I just don't think there is an answer. The Dr said using the male Rogaine foam massaged into the areas works for some people & not others. It is expensive too. I think the zinc, biotin & Silica are the best to try with a multivitamin & iron.

The Dianette pill is not commonly used now as it can cause blood clots.

Megbeth · 06/12/2013 03:01

If you cease taking the Dianette, Yaz or Yasmin then you can experience excess shedding after.

5andnomore · 07/12/2013 19:41

I feel your pain. I'm going through a similar shedding. I can hardly bear to have anyone touch my hair for fear of more falling out. I've also postponed using colour lately incase that inflames it but my greys are desperately in need of attention. GP says I'm worrying over nothing. Blood tests came back normal. It's awful.

Naicecuppatea · 07/12/2013 20:34

I do that too 5andnomore, I put off colouring my roots until they look dreadful - but colouring always helps it look a bit better, despite feeling like it's not good for the hairloss!

Sorry you are going through it too. Have you tried anything for it? Do you know why you are shedding?

Chipstick10 · 07/12/2013 20:48

My trichologist tells me colouring hair makes absolutely no difference to hairloss.

Naicecuppatea · 07/12/2013 21:07

I think it's the manipulation and the strong chemicals which sometimes causes me to shed more when I colour.
