Scrawny little ponytail, what can I do??

I have hair just short of my shoulders (wish it would grow but it's taking forever). It's really fine. It needs quite a bit of styling to wear down (it's fine, frizzy, a bit curly & I sweat a lot Sad - nice Xmas Grin). So I end up putting it straight into a pony tail. It looks ridiculous though. I look like my 4yr old daughter (from behind). I was thinking about some fake hair/scrunchy to bulk it out, but are they disgusting? Will it look really fake? Where would I purchase and are some brands better than others?

I'd appreciate any tips. Thank you.

Can you sleek it down and put a sylish clip in it at the nape of your neck?

RunningInFlipflops · 02/12/2013 21:05

Try a Jessica Simpson ponytail extension- they are great, you can style them like real hair.

toastandmarmiterocks · 02/12/2013 21:52

Thank you dopey, I was thinking more of a fake hair thing. I'll hunt out Jessica Simpson, thank you.

Oh wow, it's a minefield! Which one do you have running ? There are so many to choose from...

Watching with interest as I have same problem and no idea which fake hair to get.

JaquelineHyde · 02/12/2013 22:21

Ooooh I have this problem too. My hair is limp, thin and poker straight.

I always avoid ponytails because they look so shit, although so does everything I do with it.

Skinheadmermaid · 03/12/2013 06:29

Instead of a ponytail have you tried a side plait or a bun? That might look more elegant.

4amInsomniac · 03/12/2013 07:01

You could also try some sort of "salt spray", don't know what it is actually called, they are sold to style hair to look beachy (hope you know what I mean!). These sprays always make my ponytail much thicker, I need bigger elastics.

cantthinkofagoodone · 03/12/2013 07:11

I've just returned to one length hair and it's much thicker in appearance

WiggleAroundTheChristmasTree · 03/12/2013 07:12

Do you have enough hair to try a sock bun? You can get these donut things that you wrap your hair around and roll towards your head, it ends up hidden by the hair and makes the bun look thicker and fuller.

toastandmarmiterocks · 03/12/2013 07:47

Oo salt spray, I love a product. Sadly not enough hair for a sock bun. I'm going Christmas shopping today, will hunt out some fake hair & report back.

Proper extensions? I have them for volume not length. Amazing difference. My own hair falls so much better and I can have mo than one style. Have a ponytail for the first time in years.

southeastastra · 03/12/2013 08:03

fake hair looks pants. especially those jessica simpson jobs. really naff.

ask a hairdreser to suggest ways for you to put it up more elegantly, maybe small messy bun?

Jacksterbear · 03/12/2013 10:57

I have to wear my very fine shoulder length hair in a twisty knot-type style as a ponytail looks ridiculous on me. Would any of the up-dos here work for you?

JaquelineHyde · 03/12/2013 11:55

I love all those hair dos Jack but none of them would work with my hair, it's far too fine.

I get so jealous of anyone who can do anything with their hair.

Felix90 · 03/12/2013 11:58

Also worth checking out Sally's Glitz & Glam for extensions. They have a huge range and really cheap but look great. I've had loads of various hair pieces and extensions from them and they delivery very quickly Smile I think a lot of the pieces have customer reviews on them too and they will colour match for you via email or twitter

Pandsbear · 03/12/2013 14:35

Don't knock the twisty top knot thing OP - I have what sounds like very similar hair: thin and fine. I do wear it up mostly now but sort of divide it up at the back into three sections and twist one up, then the middle, then the third.

It will never look as voluminous as the other up-dos but it looks miles better than just down on me. I also pin curl for some body at the back and leave the front loose. It is all still close to my head as there is so little hair but at least it gives me some style options!

I don't think hairpieces will hold in your hair - you need something for them to grip on to and if your hair is like mine it will just look odd at the join. Let me know how you get on if you try any extensions.

I got the Big Hair Styler last week from Asda £28 - my hair is fine, & straggly.

here

Although I got the smaller size barrell, I can honestly say my hair looks good & its really really easy to use.

nikkihollis · 03/12/2013 16:55

www.naturalimagewigs.co.uk/Feather-Wrap-by-Hot-Hair.html Ive had the most success out of everything I've tried with things like this. You can use them with 'chopsticks' or as a scrunchie over your ponytail (but you might need bobby pins to hold them in place.)

Hothair used to have more in their range than they appear to have now. A lot of places to versions of these things though and I'd say it was worth a shot. I've had to give up on wearing my hair up as I've had a lot of hair loss and my hair is very brittle at the moment and my hairdresser has recommended not putting it up.

NoGoatsToe · 04/12/2013 11:33

I have the Babyliss hair scrunchie thing - you can get it in Boots for about £5 - so not too expensive a mistake. It's like a swirl of hair around an elastic and makes it looks like a messy bun. If you get a good colour match I think it looks better than my pathetic pony tail as I'm growing a bob out.

toastandmarmiterocks · 13/12/2013 17:03

I went for a Hot Hair dainty clip here

I've had it in all day and neither my sister or my children have noticed! It's a scruffy look (like me Grin ) but I'm happy with it. Thank you for all your tips.

I would cut it shorter. Even if you wish to grow it again, it might help to thicken it. Also, I'd eliminate any products other than shampoo and conditioner. Don't use dye, hair dryer or straighteners for a while. Hair can be so easily damaged and you could see if a "rest" for your hair might really help it out.
