Growing out very short hair cut....dreading it. How to stick with it?

I have had my (v thick, wavy, coarse) hair very short for a year. I have two small kids so it is practical. HOWEVER...I'm not sure it's really what I want. I think it rarely looks good in photos. But the thought of growing it out horrifies me. I did try a few months ago, but gave in at the first blip and had it all chopped again.

DH likes it and my mum. Noone else seems to as they very tactfully say nothing at all about it except my Dsis and my dad who have bluntly told me that it would look better longer.

I am not aiming for shoulder length locks (!). Just a longer, layered look..probably a bit like the style I had before the (French) hairdresser lopped it all off. IME French hair dressers do not know the meaning of the word 'trim'.

It is quite unruly hair so I imagine I will need a huge dose of willpower to keep going once I decide to go for it. I am 42 so it is also greying a bit.

Any tips????

Nothing to offer I'm afraid, but I'm in the same boat, although my hair is fine but i have loads of it. Watching with interest.

I would keep having it cut, even though you are growing it, to keep it looking tidy. Your hairdresser is the best placed to give you advice according to your type of hair and current style.

Alice bands are your friend.

Best of luck.

I'm in similar situation except that everyone likes my pixie crop except DH!

I plan to get it trimmed every 6 weeks to keep some shape, and take good care of the condition. I am also greying but don't mind that too much (consider it a bit of a statement tbh)

No tips I'm afraid!

I am growing out a very short bob. Having it cut every 12 weeks to retain some shape. Aiming for a style that sits on the shoulders. No way round the rubbish in between stage I fear. I use clips and pins to add interest and detract from the fact I'm growing it out.

Second that with clips and pins, and having it cut regularly to stop it looking like a cat has chewed on the ends! I feel your pain, but do keep at it.

Sonotkylie · 28/11/2013 19:09

I'm in that process too. Mine is now chin length and all one length. Has taken since April from v short graduated bob - so I suppose I have done the hard bit! I second keeping it in good condition - lots of deep conditioner on hand in case. My hairdresser refused to cut it to start with for 12 weeks as any shorter time is really a trim and takes off too much length. Try to go for as long as you can bear it, and then another week. There will be bad bits. At least in winter, you can wear a hat … or maybe tie an interesting scarf like an Alice band? I can honestly say, it wasn't as bad as I expected (I expected to fail!)

I spent years refusing to do this myself, but my advice to you would be to ask your hairdresser's advice and TAKE IT. When I did finally do what she told me, (and start going regularly) the results were worth the extra expense. why don't you ask her about tinting it to cover the grey?

JoanRanger · 29/11/2013 00:20

Scarves and lots and lots of those teeny weeny claw clips.

perplexedpirate · 29/11/2013 00:27

I had a short back and sides, dyed black/blue. I absolutely loved it, but got too old/fat.
Brylcreem was my saviour. Go for lots of texture and claw-clip straggly bits out of the way.
If you get fed up, colour it rather than cut. Good luck!

bands, scarves, clips, a hat Smile just been through it and just kept having trims to keep some shape when It got a bit longer I did a Brazilian keratin treatment - amazing made it all sleek and shiney so it looked longer straighter and nicer.
