School Mums Xmas Evening Out

Hallofmirrors · 28/11/2013 11:19

I haven't met any of the mothers in ds's class because of working full time but have been invited to the Mum' Xmas meal at a local restaurant.

In addition to going to an event where I don't know 1 single person, I haven't a clue what I should wear or how dressed up one does or doesn't get for these events.

Budget is up to about £100 including accessories and I'm 5' 3" and a size 14.

Please help.

How smart is the restaurant?

Workberk · 28/11/2013 18:47

What's your usual style?

I would choose a flattering but understated dress and wear with a funky statement necklace...

Could you arrange to meet one of the mums beforehand for a coffee?

UntamedShrew · 28/11/2013 19:27

I guarantee all the mums at ours will be wearing dark skinny jeans, heels , sparkly tops. We are very original like that :)

itscockyfoxagain · 28/11/2013 19:30

If we have one, which I think we are, I shall probably wear a nice knitted dress, tights and boots.
I don't want to look to done up but nicer than every day

LongStripedScarfWearer · 28/11/2013 19:32

I usually go for sparkly top/jeans/boots and most others do too.

But I am curious to lurk as I am the same height/size and want to see what else is suggested.

Pinupgirl · 28/11/2013 19:38

Well I would go for a very fitted "wiggle" dress, stockings and red lips but I loathe the skinnies and naice top look.

Wear what you feel your happiest and most confident in.

FeisMom · 28/11/2013 20:37

I think my DCs are at the same school as Untamed as that will be the xmas night out uniform here too

Hallofmirrors · 29/11/2013 20:12

Ah, I thought no-one was going to respond to my crisis. Like the idea of a knitted dress as am too fat for skinniest. Could I wear boots or does it need to high heeled shoes?

Good god, why would you go to that, you don't know them and it sounds hideous!

FeisMom · 30/11/2013 12:19

Cutted don't put the OP off, she is probably nervous enough about going anyway. And besides a few glasses of fizz and she'll get to know people.

FeisMom · 30/11/2013 12:24

I can almost guarantee that at least half of those that go to our school would wear some variation of this or this with either a biker jacket or seasonal faux fur jacket over.

polyhymnia · 30/11/2013 12:27

Knitted dress and boots with interesting necklace ideal, I'd think. Nice boots rather than shoes sound fine to me - and, anyway, if it's in a restaurant people will only see them when you walk in.

Fwiw, I was a working mum and used to feel doubtful about these occasions, but was usually glad I made the effort to go, and have stayed friends with a few of the other mums who also work/ed and didn't know the others that well.

Something like this?

www.clothingattesco.com/dresses/f+f-limited-edition-geometric-lace-prom-dress/invt/jg321162

with black tights and chunky heeled black boots? You could stick a cardigan over the top and remove or keep it on depending on how dressed up everyone else is!

Drywhiteplease · 30/11/2013 12:39

You'll have a great time OP . Wear whatever you feel good in. Tonight I'm wearing skinny jeans, sparkly top, heel combo Grin. Dresses are good too. Dress it up with accessories and I always do my nails, makes me feel more glam.

FeisMom · 30/11/2013 12:54

Ms23 I like the colour of that dress
