Please help.

I inherited my mums 3 stone diamond ring.

Unfortunately the stones have come loose twice now - 2 separate jewellers have confirmed its the type of setting & will continue to happen as I wear it every day.

i went to see a local jewellery designer who has come up with a few ideas and has assured me that he'll work with me to get the perfect ring.

Anyway my options is to have the stones reset in a more secure type setting (of my choice) and harder metal for which I have been quoted £460 or to have the whole ring remodelled in platinum for £980 .

Was thinking of a bar type setting - where the stones are separated by bars although any ideas of something modernish but will not date too badly would be appreciated .

I love the idea of the platinum option although it would mean that the ring would be slightly less "mums".

At the end of the day whatever I do, its a lots of cash so it has to be right and something that I'll love for ever.

I have no idea if you have been quoted a reasonable amount but I was recently quoted for an old ring which had got very thin underneath. To just replace the gold on the bit that goes under your finger it was going to be £450. That makes your remodelling look like good value and I would rather have my diamonds put I a more modern setting too. I'll watch this with interest.

It depends what it's worth to you. Sounds quite expensive to me.

Is it worth it financially - big stones worth twice as much as the setting?

I got a ring remodelled this year in platinum. It cost ££££! But all quotes were similar (ish). I decided to ask three things.
1, How much will you buy it for?
2, How much to remodel?
3, How much would a new ring with the same type stones be?

I quickly found, that if I sold it, I would have to spend more than the remodelling budget+ the ring price. I therefore took the plunge and had it remodelled. I have since got it valued for insurance purposes, and it's valued at more than the original price+ remodeling price.

So, as it was your mum's I would recommend remodeling it, and wearing it! Just find a jeweller that you trust, who you think you can trust.

mrs - if you were quoted 450 just for the gold bit under your finger,it sounds as if my jeweller is about average if he was going to charge me 460 to re model the actual setting (which would be different to the original)

Laurie- the 3 stones total just under 1crt - looking on line the average price of a "off the shelf" platinum ring setting( before the stones) appears to be around the 900 -950 mark - so I don't suppose Having it done to my design for 980 is bad value, although I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert.

I think that was probably quite a high quote, it was from a fairly expensive independent jeweller and they did offer to reduce the quote when I hesitated. I'm going to leave mine until after Christmas. I need to get the diamonds assessed to see if its a sensible proposition. The ring belonged to dh's grandma and I had it as my engagement ring, but its very worn now and DH bought me a new ring for our silver anniversary earlier this year.

I still want to wear it but it needs resizing if nothing else, but ideally I would like to remodel it. I have no idea of the carats in mine or the quality of the diamonds.
