Does anyone use them? If so which do you recommend. Specifically I like the sounds of Nuit de Noël, Nocturnes and Montaigne.

There's nowhere near me to try them out, anyone care to share their thoughts? Thanks.

Am a real Caron fan; they have quality and style but they are definitely VERY old-fashioned. Nothing wrong with that, but it's best to know what you are getting.

To me, Montaigne is rich and heavy and smells like very posh hairdressers used to, way back in the 1980s, or even earlier. Warm, powdery, 'feminine', syrupy sweet, musky, classy, elegant, complex, a touch of grandmother's handkerchief sachet ... overpowering if you don't like it. About as far from fresh air as possible, but, at this time of year, strangely comforting. Nothing cheap and nasty here.

I really like Nuit de Noel - it is indeed very suitable for the middle of winter. Incense, bitter Christmas spice, orange peel (NOT fruit), smoke, moss, maybe pine-needles (faint) or something dry and dark green like laurel or ivy, but also something floral and crisp and cool, at the same time. Probably my favourite Caron. To me, much more subtle than Montaigne.

I don't like Nocturnes - a matter of taste. A pleasant, light floral. Sandalwood, rose, vanilla, tuberose, soap - refined, ladylike; does nothing for me.

On the other hand, I DO like Caron's 'Miss Rocaille'. A real weirdo. Fresh, very green, grassy, perhaps the smell of of honey, plus an extraordinary extra note - some people say it's like plastic dustbin bags. I can see what they mean, but to me it also has a whiff of green banana; others say it smells of basil or even sea-water. I have absolutely no what is it - on me it does not last long, but the slightly bitter green flowers remain, very pleasantly.

Thank you so much florascotia for taking the time to write in so much detail. I must say that my preference was for the Nuit de Noël, you've sold me on it! I can't really stretch to the EDP at the moment, is the EDT still as lovely? I really like musky, woody, incense smells. I loved hermes eau des merveilles but became a little used to it. Would you say that Nuit de Noël has any similarities to that?

I have only ever purchased the EDT. That was in a sale about 18 months ago, and I'm racking my brains to remember where from. But there often are odd bargains on the Internet. I find it lasts quite well - a light spray lingers for two or three hours at least, and that's all I would expect from EDT.

I have not tried Eau des Merveilles, but I like other Hermes scents; like Caron perfumes, they smell very 'French', in the way that one can distinguish a nice French wine from even a good Australian. (No offence to Australian wine lovers out there ...) So I think it's very possible that the style of the Caron and Hermes scents might be similar, even if the actual ingredients differ. I hope that makes sense.

As a ps. do you by any chance know what Fleur De Rocaille is like? Your response led me on to it, on paper it ticks all the boxes for scents I like. I really wish I could smell them somewhere!Grin

Hi - sorry for delay. Have not looked at Mumsnet recently. Alas I have not tried Fleur de Rocaille. I presume that you know about sample-supplying websites? Many are in the USA, though a few in the UK. Basically, they sell samples of classic perfumes - the real thing - for around £5. Much better than making a serious mistake.
Among them, I have found surrendertochance.com/ very good.
There is also theposhpeasant.com/
and
theperfumedcourt.com/
and
www.luckyscent.com/

All might be worth investigating.

This UK site has Fleur de Rocaille very cheaply: www.allbeauty.com/productPaging.php?category=1&brand=Caron&name=Fleur+de+Rocaille&sort=price&order=1&currency=USD

So Lippy is also very good, in my experience, though deliveries can be a little bit slow: solippy.co.uk/catalog/index.php

Best wishes - and best of luck!

PS In the UK, shop.lessenteurs.com has a good reputation, though I don't think they sell Caron. Ditto www.scent-and-sensibility.co.uk/

In Europe, the following websites sell many niche scents, though not necessarily Caron:
www.ausliebezumduft.de
www.allaviolettaboutique.com/eng/default.aspx
www.parfumneroli.hu

Thank you so much.

I actually took a high gamble today and bought Nuit de Noël from a site called FragranceX. I'd read some good reviews. I was also anole to get a sample of Fleur de Rocaille there too. In total, with P&P it was £37 so I'm hoping that I like it!

I will send you a PM and let you know!

I'm sure I've seen some Caron in TK Maxx! I've been soo tempted to buy blindish :(

FrugalFashionista · 24/11/2013 20:27

Some Carons are really great. They are a great traditional perfume house that is struggling a bit atm. I like Farnesiana and the extrait versions of Narcisse Noir and Tabac Blond. Definitely not blind buys though - my modern EDP version of Tabac Blond was a dud. Samples from Les Senteurs.

FrugalFashionista · 24/11/2013 20:28

Oh and Nuit de Noel definitely worth a try at this time of the year too!

cardamomginger · 24/11/2013 23:07

Tabac Blond. Heavenly.

lookatmybutt · 25/11/2013 14:38

You can get samples from shop.lessenteurs.com/c/1076/Caron and they're in the UK. They are very helpful and jolly!

pocketandsweet · 25/11/2013 21:13

Well it gets completely slated in The Perfume Guide but I have a soft spot for Nocturnes. I was recently gifted it by a kindly person on this forum and although it wasn't the same as my memory of it (from 1980s) I still like it. After a few minutes it settles into a smell of old books. At least to me. That's a good thing.
