Sequin maxi skirt for "cocktail" dress code?

Ujjayi · 19/11/2013 22:53

I can't face buying another "cocktail dress" that will gather dust in my wardrobe from one year to the next.

I love this look. I was thinking of a dull bronze skirt with a silk black slouchy tank and a pile of bracelets.

Oooh I like it! You could always go woth a well fotted shorter tuxedo style jacket over the top too.

Have you any links to these.on the highstreet so I can copy

Laska42 · 19/11/2013 23:02

or this ....Lust lust Grin ( but sadly nowhere to wear it even if I could afford)

Ujjayi · 19/11/2013 23:14

Mortified I am making my own but will have a look and come back to you re high street versions.

Laska love the colour but not keen on the dress silhouette, tbh.

Gorgeous - go for it!

mirpuppet · 20/11/2013 00:06

How do you make a sequin garment -- does the material already have sequins or do you sew them on?

Ujjayi · 20/11/2013 00:25

Mirpuppet - you can buy sequin fabric by the metre (the kind I bought has sequins on a tulle backing fabric) but you can also embellish fabric by hand. It is very labour intensive though, depending how dense you want the embellishment to sit.

Cocktail just means 'obviously glam, but not black tie' IMO.

So that skirt would look great.

mirpuppet · 20/11/2013 07:26

Thank you. Could you please link to fabric? Maybe not one you have but similar?

Ujjayi · 20/11/2013 09:07

sample of suitable fabric

I bought mine from the local market at a bargain £5 a metre. If you cut on the bias (which will give the best fit) the metre-age required is greater than a "cut on the grain" skirt which gives you a classic pencil skirt shape. Depends on the look you want.

Funny I was looking at this one yesterday. For the similar reason.

KosherBacon · 20/11/2013 09:30

It would depend on the fabric. The ones that you have posted inspiration pictures for are very heavy with sequins, which gives the fabric a beautiful drape. The fabric you linked to looks much lighter and wouldn't have that lush feel to it.

Ujjayi · 20/11/2013 11:59

Kosherbacon - I can't speak for that specific fabric in my link but the one I have looks v similar and is a good weight for draping - much heavier than it looks. The tulle backing is deceptive and most heavily embellished fabrics have a tulle or georgette base so that they drape with fluidity. They would be too stiff otherwise. It is also v dependent on the cut as I explained before. To get the best from it then bias cut is the way to go. It will need to be lined and that will also enhance the drape & shape.

Next has one that comes in two colours £65

mirpuppet · 20/11/2013 22:15

Fantastic - thanks for the link and advice to cut on bias. I don't have the sewing skills to make a really nice garment yet -- but hopefully one day I will.

I love this. Thanks to this thread I am going to buy a maxi in my quest for a (cool-ish) wedding outfit. I already have a sequin blazer though so the skirt will have to be plain-ish. Not sure if something like this will be overkill:

Ujjayi · 21/11/2013 21:34

What colour is your sequin jacket, PrimalLass? I think the skirt you linked to would look good but I'm always wary of wearing black for a wedding.

I started making the skirt today. It's looking great :). I just need to put in the zip & hem it.

The bride is fine with black.

My jacket is this one:

I'm not sure. Will need a very plain top. Will see how it goes when I have it on.

PrimalLass · 21/11/2013 22:16

It's a cocktail party-ish kinda wedding. Trendy Glasgow media types.

Ujjayi · 21/11/2013 23:21

Love the jacket :)
