Is it possible to change the lining of a handbag? Where?

Hi, I was given a second hand handbag that I like very much but is not a recognisable brand. Very good quality, and I receive lots of compliments, people thinks it is designer.

However, the lining is awful, dirty and ugly, I am tempted to just rip it off but my friend suggest I try and wash it...I am afraid it will end up damaging the bag outer leather even if I am careful. And even if the lining gets a bit better I will still not be happy TBH.

Is there a way, somewhere I can have the lining replaced? Would that be expensive?

I have done it myself, it was quite straightforward but it depends a bit on the bag and your desire to do sewing - but if the lining is mainly separate from the bag (i.e. just connected around the inside top, and otherwise a separate piece) it should be easy for you or an alterations person to do it.

First I carefully cut the old lining out around the top, but leaving 2cm in place to attach the new lining to (sewing into leather is hard so avoid that).

I could then open up the old lining and use it as a template to make a new one out of my nice new fabric. It was basically a simple bag shape, that was easy, plus the great thing was I could add loads of new internal pockets and handy loops etc that weren't there before.

I then popped it inside, folded the top edge down and pinned then sewed it to the old lining so that it completely covered it and lined up flush to the leather. This was a hand sewing job as I couldn't have got up close to the leather with the machine. I used extra-strong thread and instead of trying to hide it just used a contrasting colour so you can see the stitching.

Don't try to wash your lovely leather bag!

Oh thanks.

Yes, the lining is separate from the bag, I think the process will be exactly like you are describing.

I won't do it myself, no, it will probably look worse than it is right now.

I think I will print your answer, if you don't mind so I explain to the person who will do it, how I want it done.

Now I need to decide: do I take the bag to my local dry cleaners or to a friend of a friend who is very good at sewing?
