Pros and cons of having my colours done, please....

Am thinking of going to House of Colour for a colour analysis. I had my colours done years ago (by Colour Me Beautiful), but have long since lost the wallet. DH thinks it's a waste of money and yes, it is expensive. However, I am hoping it will stop me wasting money on the wrong clothes and make me look younger and - well, just better .

I'd like to hear from anyone who has had their colours done and felt it wasn't worth the money, as well as those who felt it restored their youthful looks transformed their wardrobe for the better.

I'm having mine done as a Christmas present from DH. I've always lurked on the HOC threads on here, and the thing that finally convinced me was that I woman I work with had hers done a couple of months ago. She raved about it, spent a fortune on clearing out her wardrobe and re-filling it with the right stuff, and said she wished she'd had them done years ago when she was my age.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone has had it done and thought it wasn't worth it. People are usually almost evangelical about it.

totallylost · 19/11/2013 13:32

I have just (literally this morning) had mine done and I was a little cynical before I went but I am completely converted to the HOC cult. I now have to go through my wardrobe and see what fits my colours but I can see how this should save me a fortune in the long run.

Mumelie · 19/11/2013 13:56

I had it done at wuth HoC age 40 (6 months ago) and so wish I'd done it at 20! I never had compliments before on my clothing, now I get them all the time (except for days when I don't wear correct colours). Worth every penny in my opinion. Also had style day too which really helps.

sotiredfornow · 19/11/2013 13:57

I had mine done last week and it is the best £100 I have ever spent. It will save me an absolute fortune going forward and I already feel happier with myself and more positive about the future. Never feeling good in what I bought made me feel down and now I know why.

You will not regret it.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 19/11/2013 14:00

I had it done years ago and lost my wallet but I remember the shades plus know I'm suited to warmer colours. It's great and what could be wrong with some me time? Smile I know to wear either gold jewellery next to my face or a warm scarf if wearing black or other cool colours.

For those not able to afford to go try draping something golden near your face then something silver (tin foil would do) and see which looks best then you know if you suit warm or cool shades. This is interesting.

Bump--I am wondering about HOC too. I was listed as a summer several years ago (CMB) but I have never been able to wear the sweet pea colours (pastels), although I can wear some of their stronger, muted versions. I suspect things have moved on in the last couple of decades and I see Summers are now further divided.

EustaciaVye · 19/11/2013 14:39

It is brilliant. tell dh you will save a fortune....I didn't buy anything for six months as it wasn't right for me Wink

ToffeeWhirl · 19/11/2013 16:47

Really? All so positive? Maybe it is a cult! Or you are all working for HOC.

OK, think I will give it a go then.

(Eustacia - I read out your post to my DH, but he's still not convinced!).

I have done it ON MYSELF and spent the money I would have paid on a Valentino scarf [scarf]

ToffeeWhirl · 19/11/2013 18:34

Thought of that, property, but I don't trust myself to do it right.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 19/11/2013 19:17

I admit it took ages. Probably about a month! I am sure I have it right though.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/11/2013 19:18

I'd rather spend the money, to be honest!

DH paid for me to be "done" a few years ago and I recently found my wallet. I found it really interesting and the information helps steer me away from impulse bargain buys that aren't really my colour. I have just purchased a voucher for my lovely mum to be done, she has been poorly and needs a boost and a nudge away from her own not-quite-right bargain buy impulses!

50hoo · 19/11/2013 19:40

The cons are that you realise how darn good you look in 'your' colours and want to rush home and chuck out half your wardrobe Grin

I think I can work out my own style but as for my colours - I was way off. I thought I was a warm autumn and am officially a sultry winter which is actually a cool colour. Feel a bit of a wally for wearing brown for years!

Thelovecats · 19/11/2013 20:23

I have had colours done and now also done the style day. For me there were no amazing surprises on either day, but the advice is useful, and if you think of money you waste on stuff that isn't right for you it doesn't seem like so much to spend...

fanjobiscuits · 19/11/2013 20:25

Highly recommended, no real cons other than not being free!

steeking · 19/11/2013 20:28

Had mine done with CMB .
Pros are all the lovely colours i had never considered
Cons i had to throw away a few things

ShoeWhore · 19/11/2013 21:02

What did CMB class you as OP? You could probably work out your colours by looking at the kettlewell website?

CocktailQueen · 19/11/2013 22:09

I had mine done with CMB. The, it just confirms that the colours you didn't like, without knowing why, are the ones you should avoid!! But I enjoyed it, and came away knowing some new colours I could wear too. Go for it!

ToffeeWhirl · 21/11/2013 12:07

Shoe - I can't remember exactly what colours CMB classed me as - it was years ago.

I have booked myself in for a colour analysis session this weekend. What really clinched it for me was browsing a shop website and realising I simply had no idea which colours to buy. DH is shaking his head in despair, but humouring me (has even promised to drive me there because it's a difficult journey by public transport and I don't drive. Aww.).

The booking form is full of lots of silly marketing speak about 'my investment' and how it's the 'start of my colour and image journey'. I hope I'm not going to be pressured to spend even more money.

Will report back .

Well done for taking the plunge.

You do not have to buy any of their products - they are usually very good about not giving you the hard sell. But I would recommend trying on lipsticks to gain an idea of what would suit you and then you can buy similar colours in your preferred brand. The HoC season threads on here are very good about recommending make up for your season.

I find I save a lot of money because I am forced to think through each purchase so I don't get tempted to impulse buy.

ToffeeWhirl · 24/11/2013 18:44

OK, I'm in the cult now Grin. Had a wonderful, self-indulgent day at the HOC session. There is no way I could have analysed myself. I have come away with a swatch of colours that suit me (I am an Autumn) and lots of useful tips about make up. DH has already suggested I buy the lipstick I came home in.

So glad I went now.
