I would head to a salon, even if you can't afford a colour there. Most do free consults and should advise a suitable shade for you. HTH

Wear tight fitting cloves, use Vaseline on your hairline, use 2 packets the first time to have enough product to take colour right to the ends, do the roots every 3-5 weeks, wear an old dark t shirt. Foam is easier to use but useless for covering grey. I swear by Loreal Excellence to cover grey. Use a tinting brush and a bowl (from Superdrug) to apply colour instead of the applicator bottle. Buy a shade lighter than you think you need, as it is easier to go darker next time.
Good luck!

this may be a long post but hopefully it will help

Serouisly i am the hair dying queeen i change my colour dramatically every few weeks this yeat i have gone from baby blonde to brown to aurborn to purple to hot pink to red to light brown to black to honey blonde to pearl blonde and now snow white , obviously i dont advise anyone to do this to there hair in just one year has it may fall out ( im real lucky) and im really good at colour correcting nyself i do what hair dressers refuse to do only to go back and show off my work ep going from jet black to white in the space of a fortnight again i dont not advise anyone to do this but what i want to prove is you is its not easy to runie your hair one bit it takes quite some determination to harm your hair and after all no matter what its only hair it will grow back if you are just looking to cover grey id go with one that slowly fades or washes out and once that adds gloss and shine the loreal casting cream gloss is really good it adds depth and makes your hair alive with shine just using this WILL NOT harm your hair your hair only snaps off when over processed mainly threw a total abuse of bleach and even that is fixable in my experience , you dont give a indication of your hair color if you are not wanting to change the colour of your hair and just wanting to cover roots then pick a shade close BEWARE chocolate, dark browns etc colours normally almost always come out black the darker the brown the darker the black i dont know why this happens but it almost always dose , if you have naturally dark hair choose a shade 2 or 3 shades lighter than your colour ( relating to any brand permanent or not ) if you need any advise on colour correction or hair repair message me ps ... dont fall for the hairdresser knows best this is not the case you should know your own hair better than a hair drssers 50 percent of hairdressers dont do what you want they do what they want and the only 2 colour disaster i had was both with hair dressers there evil :) l;ol sorry to any hair dressers has seen as you are opting for a semi to cover grey and add gloss and not to dramatically change colour or lighten i would 190 percent recommend doing it yourself for 6 pounds you really dont NEED a hair dresser for this its only like shampooing your hair :)

cocochip1 might be better advice if you use a little bit of punctuation and some paragraphs, I'm really struggling to read it Confused

Agree with sandwich and maraki though- pick lighter and make sure you patch test. A friend to help do the back is really helpful too!
