Please help me with practical but stylish sensible coat and boots

I have recently moved to a small market town surrounded by country from London. Big change of lifestyle and I love it here, but rapidly realise what worked as reasonably sensible winter clothes in London just don't cut it here. I am getting soaked and muddy. I spend the majority of the week running around with my baby and three year old. I need some help with what to buy.

I need some flat, waterproof boots to throw on with skinny jeans in all weathers that I can drive in too, more for muddy pavements/park use than serious country walks, so best if ankle or calf (also have short legs). I have taken a look at Dubarry boots Dubarry, but only really like the full length and they are a bit spendy, but if they are worth it I will reconsider.

I can't decide if I like Merrell boots like these or not Merrell or also merrell.

I know people recommend the timberland Nellie here but I am not sure they are me.

Any advice or alternatives?

On a waterproof warm coat I am stuck. It needs to be hip lengthish or shorter, not too bulky and again, I need to drive in it. Puffa type coats drown me and I don't like the feel. I don't like the Merrell coats people adore on here and DH informs me I am not a parka person. I don't need a hood. I find myself wishing I could afford Belstaff. Are Barbour ok?

I would like to look not frumpy and a bit stylish, but be warm, and I also don't want to look like the twit from London (if that is at all possible). Any help much appreciated.

I have some ilse Jacobsen short boots that might fit the bill. They are rubber but They have a slightly fleecy lining so not as cold as normal wellies. They fit quite big so would recommend if you are between sized you go down not up.

I have a barbour article down parka that is very cosy - appreciated it this morning! Have been told its naff and nouveau on here but I love it.

Why is barbour nouveau? Is it because kate Middleton wears them.

I almost like that coat, but not quite, it's something about the pockets I think.

Some Barbours are really nice aswell as being practical.Shame about the price tag though!

Will watch with interest as coats are a pain.
