I recently enquired about a job at dds school and instead of sending me information, they've asked me to come in for an informal chat. I don't know if it's for this job or another project they might have in mind. I haven't been in a formal workplace for about 5 years but have all my work clothes. I don't want to do they whole suit thing, especially as it's not a formal interview so would tailored trousers, smart thin jumper, heels and pretty scarf be suitable? Eeek! Digging out all my non-mum clothes.....

Wear what you would wear to the job if you get it.

jimijack · 14/11/2013 14:32

Sounds good, it's what I wore for the informal visit I had a few weeks ago.

Hi butterflies, I think your suggestion of tailored trousers, thin jumper and heels is spot on. That will be smart without being too much. Very best of luck.

starfishmummy · 14/11/2013 14:49

What you plan sounds.fine for a school as long as the heels are not too high!!

There is no such thing as an "informal chat". Treat it as an interview - you are being interviewed.

Snowbility · 14/11/2013 15:18

Agree with middle dress smartly.

Stokey · 14/11/2013 15:41

Personally I would go for a dress rather than trousers or a skirt - not as smart as a suit but a but more effore than trousers

snowgirl1 · 14/11/2013 15:50

I also agree with Middle - there's no such thing as an informal chat when it comes to a job you're going for. It's an interview. Dress as smartly as you would if you'd been told it was a formal interview.

ElizabethBathory · 14/11/2013 16:51

Agree - treat it as an interview. All the 'informal chats' I've had have felt more like interviews, one was even with a panel of senior staff sat in front of me Hmm

SoldeInvierno · 14/11/2013 18:10

All my informal chats have been full-on interviews. I don't understand why people use this euphemism.

Smart trousers are fine for a school. You need to wear what you will wear if you get the job. Good luck!

OMG, hope it isn't an interview. I just responded to 2 lines in the school newsletter asking for more information about a role there. "Literally XYZ school is looking for an XYZ Coordinator - for more information, please email ...". I don't even have a job description....

I'll have a look through my boxes of workwear, think I can find a smart wrap dress.

Yes, I've been caught out by the 'informal chat' approach before. No two ways about it, it is an interview but by another name

butterfliesinmytummy · 16/11/2013 00:09

Thanks all, turns out it was a 10 minute chat in the deputy heads office, interview will be in 2 weeks. I wore back trousers, pale pink wraparound cotton shirt and black kitten heels. Job sounds ok, suits what I'm looking for, see what happens....
