Does getting gel nails ruin natural nails?

If you get it done repeatedly?

I love painted nails but don't want the gels to ricin my natural nail.

Really fancy trying gels!

Yep and i speak as a nail tech.

I get OrlyFX occassionally and my nails emerge stronger if anything. I certainly wouldn't say they were damaged at all.

I find shellac nails or similar ruin my nails. After they come off they are much weaker, all break then it takes ages to get back to nice nails, even though mine grow quickly.

Decided its not worth it, but I now don't want to go back to normal polish that chips really quickly.

I would say yes.

I've had tbe Jessica Geleration ones for years now. My nails were terrible when I started. Now they are strong and in pretty good condition.

hashtagwhatever · 13/11/2013 20:44

in short yes. they end up thin and flaky.

I am a beauty therapist and I say OH MY GOD NO THEY DON'T! If they are applied correctly (beauticians skill) and looked after properly (your responsibility) and removed correctly (beauticians skill) then absoloutly not!

Your dry nails was caused by the acetone Haunted and could have been corrected/prevented by cuticle oil.

If you are getting your nails done at one of these nail bars, usually run by orientals (this is not a racist remark, it's because 9 times out of 10 they are) then the potential for nail damage is high as their ethos is to have a quick turnaround to maximise profits and this is achieved by using sub standard products and 'drills' on the nail plate. I have had many clients over the years from such nail bars and yes, they have considerable damage but luckily nails grow and it's not permanent and I can usually get their nails back to health again using proper techniques and good quality products.

yourbeingasillybilly if you find your clients are coming back to you with damage then you need to look at your technique.

Yes. I've always had really good nails until I had a set of gels. I couldn't believe how bad they looked after the varnish was taken off and how much care I am having to take of them now. The gels did look great for about 6 days though and OK for another few days after that.
