Work shoes to wear in winter pls

I usually wear flats (ballet type but sturdier and without the bow) with my dresses and trousers. But they are clearly not practical for the wet, mud and cold. I am trying to find some boots to wear with my dresses but I would like some other shoes to wear with trousers (flats preferably). Loafers? Brogues?

Ideas gratefully received. I am a pretty boring/classic dresser. Smart but not suits (banana republic, gap, hobbs sometimes). And have to walk loads with nursery runs and schlepping to meetings (hence no heels).

Thanks!

Hmm I also wear ballet style shoes until it gets wintery. Then i have flat leather boots in black and brown. I mean boots which come up to mid thigh - looks good with skirts/dresses.

Or sometimes i wear snow boots and then change into more "work" shoes when i get to work. Then change back before i go home and keep my work shoes at work.

I had same dilemma and recently bought these preppy loafers from Kurt Geiger: www.johnlewis.com/carvela-lullaby-loafers/p519484?kpid=232198836&s_kenid=7160c2ea-662c-aa68-c26f-00002317cee9&s_kwcid=ppc_pla&tmad=c&tmcampid=73
(on sale here at JL). They go with most things actually!

RunningGuerita · 13/11/2013 18:30

Thank you for the replies and suggestions. I like the loafers! Any other ideas welcome.

I walk in in boots and change at work.

DrHolmes · 13/11/2013 18:34

I am sorry but how old are you OP because i see those loafers as something an old lady would wear!

I am trying to think what i wear with trousers in the winter but i think i just switch to dresses because it is easier.

Will watch with interest.

WillieWaggledagger · 13/11/2013 18:35

lol at your 'mid thigh' typo drholmes

how high is too high? could you manage mid-lowish heeled ankle boots with trousers? they would also work with dresses

Doshusallie · 13/11/2013 18:36

I bought some sturdy black flat loafers from accessorise for £32.. Would link but can't find them.. Very comfy and warm.

miaowmix · 13/11/2013 18:44

How rude Dr Holmes.
Anyway, I am in my 40s so perhaps you see me as an old lady? FYI I wear mine with leather shorts as well as pencil skirts and jeans. I like to think my style is not so old lady-ish, just smart enough for work...

Doshusallie · 13/11/2013 18:52

They can't be that old fashioned if they are in high street stores!!

Doshusallie · 13/11/2013 18:52

PS OP my incredibly fashionable twin nieces wear flat Chelsea boots from Hobbs/Zara, with jeans as well as skirts. They look v chic. The nieces are 23, beautiful and chic, so I trust their fashion advice, even for an old lady such as myself Wink.

DrHolmes · 13/11/2013 19:15

I am allowed to say if I think they look like old ladies shoes! Sorry Grey. I am 27 and maybe when I'm in my 40's I will curse my younger self. However, whenever I see these shoes i just think old lady. My 85 year old granny wears them. That's probably why.

willie - i knew there was something wrong with that! Haha oops!

miaowmix · 13/11/2013 19:25

Course you are Holmes, you probably just hit a nerve is all Wink.
The cool young women at my work (I say young, 30 ish) often compliment my clothes/shoes so I figure i'm doing alright.
When I was 27, 40 seemed really really old to me too. I just want to say now I am here, it isn't! #midlifecrisis

Lagoonablue · 13/11/2013 19:31

Actually loafers and brogues are very in at the moment.

RunningGuerita · 13/11/2013 19:43

I am old. I am 40 :-)
Anyway the changing shoes thing doesn't work for me because I typically go straight from client meetings back to home / nursery and vice versa. That is why I wear flat shoes so I can schlep around London.
I was actually worried that the ankle boot with work trousers over them would look old lady'ish.

I have a lovely pair of heeled brogues which go nicely with trousers at work.

CaptainWentworth · 14/11/2013 07:51

I'm 30 and I have a pair of Russell and Bromley black patent loafers not dissimilar to those linked- they were popularised by Alex Chung, who isn't exactly an old lady is she??

Anyway I wear mine with dresses mostly- anything just on the knee or shorter with flat shoes IMO. I'm with you OP and really any be doing with heels for work- I want to be able to walk goddammit! I think they would look good with either skinny or wide trousers but I can't be arsed finding trousers that suit me any more so I don't bother. Black opaques all the way!

I also have a pair of these www.russellandbromley.co.uk/long-boots/gold-dryxl/invt/371122
which I highly highly recommend for the winter- they're expensive but they keep me warm and dry, are smart enough to wear with tailored skirts (can get away with slightly longer ones with knee boots I think), look good with skinnies too, and are now going into their 4th winter.

CaptainWentworth · 14/11/2013 07:52

Can't be doing with heels

LaCerbiatta · 14/11/2013 08:31

I've got the Ckarks black patent brogues. They're very comfortable and smart too.

LaCerbiatta · 14/11/2013 08:33

link

RunningGuerita · 14/11/2013 11:23

Thanks for the ideas. I think the patent leather in the brogues or the loafers makes them a bit more stylish.
