This dress - rate or slate??

I'm thinking of getting this dress to wear to an evening cocktail party this summer (I know, I like to plan ahead!). I'm a young (so im told) looking 37 yr old, slim size 10 with a mummy tum and not bad legs. I like the look of this dress because the drape effect is good for hiding mum tum and the colour would suit me - I'm a winter.

What do you ladies think?? Rate or slate ?

Thanks!

I quite like it tbh, BUT it looks like something you'd get from Warehouse for £50 and is stupidly expensive for polyester. If I had £200 odd to spend on a dress,
I'd get this or this.

lifesgreatquestions · 10/11/2013 19:38

I love the colour and the hang of it. I'm not keen on gold accents but like the concept of the zipped shoulders. However, like some others, I don't think it's worth the price. Good luck with your search, you have time yet!

Someone yesterday on another thread recommended the Pretty Dress Company. They said that the cut and fabrics were really good quality.

www.theprettydresscompany.com/fashion/Mistress-Black-Day-Dress.html#SID=39 this is sweet, very classic and probably wouldn't date. They have some floral dresses that look more summery.

ShreddedHoops · 10/11/2013 19:45

Slating it, sorry! It does look cheap with the zips.

DvF do similar drapey dresses in vivid colours and often pop up on sites like Outnet. In fact there's one on there now which you might like, a vivid dark pink one shouldered one. But I'd wait til after Xmas when there should be plenty bargains around.

ProtectiveMother · 10/11/2013 20:15

Don't like it at all personally. REALLY recommend the pretty dress company. Fab!

DontmindifIdo · 10/11/2013 20:19

See, I've currently got my eye on this one and think it might suit you...

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 10/11/2013 20:29

The blue Viv W one is gorgeous - and I did quite like the original one.
I suspect Viv's dresses are also polyester though, if that's a problem.

If I had £200+ to spend, that's what I'd get.

Don't worry about the length - you're 37 not 67!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/11/2013 20:34

Viv's tend to be viscose, rather than polyester. Some are silk - but they tend to be the £500 plus ones. :)

Oh I love that Mint Velvet one.

i think its a bit boring

As you are a tallish slim 37 yr old I'd get something more fashionable next summer. You'll be able to get something from Zara which will cost way less & be more stylish. If you want an investment dress I'd go for Diane Von Furstenberg in the sale from Matches, Net a Porter or My Wardrobe. Their sizing comes up a bit big on non-wrap dresses, you should be fine in a US size 6. Allegra Hicks dresses are also good & she is now doing a range for John Lewis which is very good value & well designed. Oh & I've just remembered the Alice Temperley Somerset range at John Lewis, that has some good dresses.

Thanks for the DvF recommendations - just had a look online and I've fallen in love!! There seem to be quite a few designs suited to winter colouring too.

The dresses from Pretty Dress Company are also really lovely but their fitted/body con style won't be too forgiving on my mummy tum i don't think and I just hate being squashed into spanx especially in the summer heat.

I'd wait until next Spring tbh- why buy now?

Have a look at Mint Velvet, LK Bennett, Jigsaw, TED BAKER, French Connection, Reiss, Whistles, ................

The ones you linked are a rip off for that money and you really are paying for the name.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 12:50

I like the draping affect but prefer this one as it has no zips and is 70 per cent viscose (which is made from tree sap) and a little polyester and elastane for stretch. What do you think. Im thinking of getting it??

This dress - rate or slate??
MillyRules · 11/11/2013 12:51

Its thick jersey and is one hundred and nine pounds and is by Part Two Clothing.

MillyRules · 11/11/2013 13:00

Or wood pulp.....cant remember which....
