So..... enemas....

They're supposed to be fab for the skin and for weightloss, and helping the liver function more efficiently (I think mine is a bit sluggish). It's something I've never tried before, and I've ordered a home kit, because I cringe at the prospect of dealing with self-inflicted explosive diarrhea in a nice clean beauty salon!

Does anyone have first hand experience? I'm apprehensive but I'm going ahead with it!

Nobody? I'll google for hints and tips then. If anyone wants a review let me know Grin

I had one a few years back - well a colonic irrigation with a coffee enema "on the side"

To be honest - it did nothing for me. Felt a bit sick and shivery afterwards and nothing old came out. The nurse who did it (as her evening job after administering them all day in local hospital - weird) reckoned that if you don't eat a lot of fatty foods then you don't really see much "grey gunk" coming out.

Didn't lose any weight, didn't have a clear skin moment, didn't have any real visible benefit at all.

Probably not what you wanted to hear?

With my nurse head on.....squirting god knows what bought online into your lower intestine will do nothing for your liver function. How do you know that your liver function is "sluggish"? I think a couple of weeks of no alcohol/fatty or sugary foods would be preferable and less expensive. I've seen what happens when the bowel is perforated with a home enema and I hate that to happen to you Smile .

I agree with marylou2. I would also be concerned about the amount of water that you are unnaturally stretching your bowel with could have an adverse effect, especially if you plan on doing it regularly.

A safer way to having a healthy bowel is to make sure you are hydrated, eat plenty of fibre, eat healthy fats which are found in nuts, eggs etc. vitamin A is important in forming the mucous in your bowel which lubricates your faeces, so eat plenty of carrots etc.

Probiotic yoghurts are good for healthy bacteria and are far safer than pumping water up your backside!

If you must go ahead, here are some tips

Enemas just clean out the rectum and lower bowel (depending on the volume).

Ain't going to do much for your liver...

Better to treat it from the top down - better diet, no alcohol, plenty of water and fresh air and exercise.

The only way enemas are good for the liver are if you are someone with liver disease, usually alcohol induced with encephalopathy. They need several bowel movements a day to remove the toxins from their system as their liver cannot excrete them because it's damaged.

I'd like to know how you determine the efficency of your liver function????

ShinyBauble · 09/11/2013 09:45

Well I have hashiomotos thyroiditis, and my urine PH is below 6.4. These things together point to a liver issue (though I'm not really sure how, it's just what I was told!) I am meant to do coffee enemas with good organic coffee, but that's the part I'm really baulking at - it seems a waste of good coffee!

I do remember seeing an episode of Embarrassing Bodies where a woman couldn't poop naturally because she did so many enemas, but I am just going to try it once or twice and see I there are any health improvements.

I'm with marylou, as a nurse, unless this has been medically prescribed I'd personally be really wary of doing it.

The only way to know that your liver isn't functioning properly is to have liver function blood tests done.

It's also really hard to administer an enema yourself. I've had to give myself mini enemas for constipation and it's not easy as ideally you should be lying on your side.
