Over Knee Boots - Yay or Nay?

Recently been seeing lots of these in the shops. In particular this sort of thing in Russell and Bromley. Those are £400 - so I won't be getting them, but lots of shops seem to be doing cheaper versions. I need a new pair of knee boots (old ones falling apart) so I am very tempted.

A little concerned about the "Over Knee = Pretty Woman" aspect but think I can get away with it. They'll either be flat or with a small block heel. Intending to wear them with opaques or woolly tights and tweed/wool short skirts or shorts.

They really don't look anything like the Pretty Woman boots! I think they will look good with skirts and shorts.

mammadiggingdeep · 05/11/2013 10:40

I do like them but when I've tried them on I feel too pantomime....

I do junk they look good on others though..

mammadiggingdeep · 05/11/2013 10:41

Well, as no-one has said I'll look like a hooker, I plan to get a similar pair to the Russell and Bromley's.

I shall tell myself that over-knee is an on-trend alternative to knee-highs (which MN tells me are unfashionable at the moment) when I don't want to wear ankle boots. Grin

I bought some in Milan last week, really lovely, soft black suede and leather. Wore them into my provincial market town on Sunday and I honestly think the locals thought I was touting for business. Many looks. This was with a knee length (not tight at all!) pencil skirt so the knee only showed in flashes when walking. Admittedly the fishnets may have been a mistake! I'd consider where you're planning to wear the boots, London, yes, Middle England, no.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 06/11/2013 12:56

The new over the knee boots are less Pirate and more subtle this year though?

Only slightly over the knee at the front, not so much at the back.

Raddy · 06/11/2013 12:59

Pretty Woman - no.

Pirate or Pantomime - yes.

AlternativeMoniker53 · 06/11/2013 13:09

Mine are the new shape, only slightly over the knee at the front. I'm going to have to start going up to London more to get any wear out of them though!

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 06/11/2013 13:13

They don't look like Pretty Woman boots. Hooker boots- well each to their own but I wouldn't wear them personally.

Those boots = lovely. And look warm Definitely think they need thick tights or leggings under though. With a bare leg or nude tights they could start looking a bit 'sexy schoolgirl', which personally is not a look I'd want.

Chewbecca · 06/11/2013 13:41

Teresa May was wearing a pair just like that this week, article in the Times about it today!

RobinVanPrissy · 06/11/2013 15:17

I am nuts about over the knee boots this year. Deffo not 'pirate' style, but I have over knee riding boots in brown and black, and they look good with shorter dresses or tunics and thick tights, as less leg in display. I was in NYC not long ago and they definitely seem to be more in fashion there with the trendy Soho crowd, too. Don't seem to so ubiquitous here. I'm a fan, though!

Snowlike · 06/11/2013 17:23

I love these these I think they look great but not for the conservative dresser. Grin

Beaverfeaver · 06/11/2013 17:57

My rule is that if the boots have a high heel then they should be under the knee.

If they are low or flat heeled then over the knee.

I love my over knee boots and live in them as they are so comfy.
I got them for my birthday a few weeks ago from Kurt Geiger

MikeLitoris · 06/11/2013 18:03

I've seen a few people with really soft looking possibly suede just over the knee oned recently.

Anyone seen any around?

Tiredemma · 06/11/2013 18:11

My MIL has these Stuart Weitzman ones that look amazing on her (and on Kate Moss who was in his ad campaign)

MIL is about 5'10 and has amazing legs so she can get away with it.

I am 4'11 with legs that look like chicken drumsticks so would look beyond ridiculous in suck boots (like Puss in Boots)

Thems the ones beaver!

I love them.

50ShadesOfMaybe · 07/11/2013 09:50

After all this (and refusing to be put off by Teresa May) I trawled the shops yesterday and tried on various copies of the R&B 5050 boots in Dune, Jones, etc. I eventually bought these from River Island (not the shop I was intending to get them from).

They do break flat-heel rule that Beaver mentions, but the heel is blocky and not too high. I felt they looked slightly better on me than the completely flat versions.

So far, loving them!

Personally I think you either want to look like a hooker or Pantomime girl/boy in them...

even when wearing opaques..

SundaySimmons · 07/11/2013 10:56

One of my favourite films is Small Sacrifices.

Near the end of the film, Farrah playing Diane Downs is dolled up wearing over the knee boots. The detective taking her to prison says I loved the part in Small Sacrifices when they're taking her to prison and the detective says, "nice boots Diane, where'd you get em, catwoman?"
