Teeth whitening and burning gums??

Please can anyone advise? I've got a kit from dentist with trays and 4 syringes. I was prepared for sensitivity but my lord the burning gums is unbearable. I really don't think I'm putting too much gel in, in fact I wondered was I being too cautious... Anyway, has anyone else experienced this and managed to push ahead?!

I had mine done by the dentist.

I was also given trays and gel to use for a week afterwards.

The burning pain was unreal!!!

I usw Daywhite in trays. Try putting a rice grain amount on the lower part of the tooth impression so when you put the tray in it doesn't squidge out onto your gum. Did hurt a bit the first time but easier after that. Would go back to the dentist for advice. Perhaps you could use a lower concentration product?

use* silly phone!

liftthatup · 04/11/2013 21:47

Ooh, replies! Thank you! Suga, did you stick with it?
Ok, will try again with little dabs in each impression. Bloody hell, vanity DOES feel painSmile

It was about 6 years ago now, i think i only had to do it for about 5 days, twice a day for half hour a time.

Oh yes i stuck with it as it was to complete the course what the dentist had done and at £500 i was completing it whether it hurt or not! Lol

I remember it being painful to eat though

liftthatup · 04/11/2013 22:30

I know! I've forked out £300 so far and just can't believe the burny gum pain. You'd think they'd mention it...

Ok. I will have white (if rather uneven) teeth.

Screech Sad

How long do you have to wear these trays for?

liftthatup · 04/11/2013 22:43

Well dentist said approx every night for 2 weeks but that the gel is only active for a couple of hours at a time. Tbh I'll try to persevere as bravely as I can (!!) but I think I can see a difference after 2 nights so hopefully it won't take long. I thought I had a high pain threshold- clearly not!

What % gel are you using? My dentist gave me 16%, but in my impatience I got 21% from amazon and that burnt my gums and made my teeth soooo sensitive the next day!

liftthatup · 05/11/2013 10:13

Back again after not too bad a nightSmile Checked the syringe and the solution is 16%. I put tiny little blobs in each impression and no burny gums! On the down side I can't be sure that my teeth were properly coated but I'm hoping that while it might take a bit longer to achieve results at least it's bearable to sleep at night. Fingers crossed and thank you for all your input.

The advantage of whitening kits from your own dentist is that you shouldn't experience any burning sensation. Your teeth may be a little sensitive but the gums shouldn't be sore.
You're probably using too much bleach. My dentist told me that each blob should be no bigger than a lentil size, it didn't sound enough to me, but I followed her instructions and after two weeks I had lovely white teeth.
That was 7 years ago and am only just now needing a top up - and I drink lots of red wine and tea.

HerdyHerdwick · 05/11/2013 11:29

I've just seen the advice from marylou2 about using less and your update this morning. Glad there's no burny gums now! It will work even with a small amount.
Are you doing 7 days on lower jaw then 7 on upper? What did your dentist advise?

Mrsmorton · 05/11/2013 13:17

21% is an unbelivably strong percentage. I'm seriously amazed that firstly you thought buying medicine off the internet was a good idea and secondly that you shelled out for the dentist and then jeopardised your oral health anyway.

You need a tiny amount of gel, there shouldn't be any squeezing out onto your gums.

There's no set time for this treatment, you whiten them as quickly or slowly as you like and do it for as long as you like (how white do you want your teeth?). You can do top and bottom together, alternate nights, one after the other. It doesn't matter. The issue with doing them together is that any side effects (like sensitive teeth) will be on both arches at the same time.

littlemissnormal · 05/11/2013 14:56

Yes well like I said, I found that out myself so the reprimand from you is slightly unnecessary.

liftthatup · 05/11/2013 15:18

Yes, the smaller amount was definitely the way to go. When dentist demonstrated the technique he placed a line of gel right around the bottom of the impressions so I had been copying that- thus burning issue. I guess it's trial and error and I now know that individual blobs suit me much better. Hopefully my gnashers will rival Rylan's soon HmmThanks again for all the suggestions!

Oh, and I'm using both trays at once...
