Until this past year I always struggled loads with style & what to wear - I knew what I liked but not how to put it together, and I always felt like I got it a bit wrong, especially at parties etc.

Things that have really helped me are:

  1. Realising that just because I like something, doesn't mean it suits me. e.g. I love large patterned floral, chintzy tea dress type things but I am 5"2 and they make me look like Delores Umbridge, not like the gorgeous English rose I imagine in my head.
  1. Trying on EVERYTHING - I have big hips and for years hid them in baggy clothes, 50's style flared skirts and skater dresses. Have now discovered that pencil skirts look much better and make me look thinner, they also look more pulled together for work.
  1. Getting a range of nice tops/tees/blouses which work with both skinny jeans at the weekend and tucked into a pencil skirt for work. This makes me feel like I have a coherent "look".
  1. Mentally create "outfits" for different contexts, so I'm not standing in my undercrackers weeping at 7.30am feeling like I have nothing to wear - I know that x goes well with y, what shoes/bag/accessories go with the outfit and it's so much easier to get dressed.
  1. Work out a Good "basic face" of make up which takes 5 mins - for me this is moisturiser, foundation, concealer and lip balm, also having eyebrows threaded regularly makes the whole lot look better.
  1. getting a good jacket (I actually have a couple of blazers & a biker), some nice scarves, 2 x skinny jeans (1 black and 1 indigo) which can be mixed and matched with the tops I already mentioned = instant easy outfits which make me feel put together with no effort.

more tips for a style newbie, please! especially on winter layering without looking like a bag lady...

Oh god....

You sound so organised. Nothing to help you but I'm watching with interest as I need help!!! More than you, you sound 'together' and sorted!! My wardrobes a mish mash....

ArtemisatBrauron · 02/11/2013 12:59

haha it's all a sham, I am really lazy and disorganized naturally but started a really busy job last September and had to do something to sort out my life!

Getting rid of the clothing clutter - it's much easier to work out what to wear when I don't have to wade through things that don't fit, or that were mistaken buys, or I just don't like any more.

And in a similar vein - keeping on top of the laundry (and putting away) - it's no good having a capsule wardrobe and knowing what goes well with what if those things are at the bottom of the laundry basket (or crumpled on the floor Blush).

I have also done a colours day at HoC, which has helped a lot, and made me more willing to put colours together that I might have hesitated about before.

I've been pondering having colours done but hesitating as its a lot to pay if it doesn't help much! I need a taster session to convince me I think.

It's all about fit - buy several of the basics that look great on you. Like OP mentioned, if you find a killer pair of jeans get them in black and denim, or a light and dark wash. Same with tops, if you find a super flattering one get them in a few colors. Then you can mix up your look with blazers, jackets, scarves and shoes. Jewelry is key too! Great jewelry can make you look really polished and put together. And look for quality (which doesn't always have to be expensive), that's what makes you look posh.
