Ow, ow, ow! Cleanser/moisturiser recommendations for sensitive, eczema-prone skin?

I've got sensitive skin, which is prone to eczema both at the base of my nose and high on my cheek bones.

I've been using Avene products on it (Hydrance optimale riche moisturiser and the no-rinse cleanser) but it doesn't seem happy any more. In particular, the cleanser now makes my face sting and go red, while I've got very dry skin on my cheeks and I'm also getting the odd spot around my chin.

What on earth should I try next? Is there anything more gentle than the Avene cleanser?

Have you tried a sample of Clinique or Body Shop Aloe Vera? They are both good at giving you little pots to sample.

I tried the clinique 3 step system ten years ago, and it made my cheeks crack and bleed, so I was a bit put off by that! However, I know they've reformulated it since - has anyone tried it recently?

There is a clarins range for sensitive skin. I had facial eczema in my late teens and early 20 s tried everything from doctors and homeopath. Teas really bad cracked and bleeding in parts. The clarins stuff sorted it, including scarring I had too they do a matching repair oil which is wonderful. I still go back to it when I flare up. Really works for me.

Google 'purenuffstuff' - cannot recommend their sensitive range enough! Also, when I get a flare-up (VERY dry tight skin) I moisturise exclusively with E45 for a few weeks and wash with warm water only. I don't generally use much make up other than a swipe of mascara and lippy so can usually get away with not cleansing / toning for a while.

Brillenbar · 01/11/2013 17:37

The clarins cleanser is called extra comfort cleanser - they do a matching moisturiser

I have very dry, ultra sensitive skin but like going to spa's
The elemis harmonie range is superb, I have never had any redness and it feels great

I have sensitive skin, it seems to get better as I get older which is good...I have tired a few brands, clinique was always too harsh, lancome was lovely but expensive, estee lauder is my favorite, particularly their night repair stuff in the brown bottle, I'll use that if my skin is feeling particularly in need of tlc. Clarins is gentle enough too.

I have sensitive skin prone to eczema and I use Superdrugs Naturally Radiant hot cloth cleanser, eye cream and moisturiser. I haven't had a single flare up since I started using it, I have almost no spots at all (except for a few at TOM) and my skin looks and feels clean.

I bought some Avene and it made me very sore, red and stingy. I used coconut oil with a warm muslin cloth and then slathered some on as a moisturiser, it immediately felt loads better. I'm using Eucerin in the day now and coconut oil as a night cream.

valiumredhead · 01/11/2013 23:29

The body shop Ashlie range is fantastic too,I agree.

And in the morning I use Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser for Dry & Sensitive Skin.

Thanks for all the suggestions and sorry to disappear for a bit, but DS is having a wheezy night.

I'm going into town tomorrow, so I'll be checking some of these suggestions out. Those of you who mentioned E45/eucerin (sorry, am on my phone so can't see specific posters' names), is there a particular product in the range you'd recommend?

Do those of you who find hot cloth cleansing good live in areas with hard or soft water? Our water's really hard, which has put me off trying cleanse and polish-type cleansers in the past, but right now, I'm willing to give pretty much anything a go!

I use Cliniques cleansing balm with a hot flannel and super defence moisturer.I have reacted to nearly every other range over the years and so I now use the minimum no. Of products on my face.

valiumredhead · 02/11/2013 11:23

Yeah we're in a hard water area, makes no difference for hit cloth cleansing, except if you have sensitive skin it's better ime to use cool water.
