Foundation brushes.

Help. I need a foundation brush. But do I want a flat one, a stipple one or one of the fat ones with the flat top?

Newbie to this but as I have turned 40 I now need better application as my skin isn't what it used to be.

Also I use RMS beauty "Un-cover" as foundation. It's a tiny pot which looks solid but is moist and has adjustable coverage and is a bit like a mousse/whipped consistency.

I also use a silica powder but my brush applies it too thickly so it looks funny and a bit patchy. What type of brush do I need for this?

Help!! Grin

I use a flat one.

MrsFlorrick · 31/10/2013 22:08

Thank you. May I ask how you apply it. Do you sort of paint it on in small strokes? And do you go up or downwards??

Real Techniques foundation brush £9.99 in Boots. Fab for applying foundation. I always hated foundation brushes, but this doesn't 'hold' the product, so less waste. Foundation can be buffed onto face, gives a lovely finish with both my Dior and cheaper foundation.

Ooohh. Wecant. That sounds great!

So buffing is the way forward. Interesting. I am off to Boots to have a gander.

I will also be near a House of Fraser a John Lewis and an M&S

Sorry, that was short!

I use a flat foundation brush to apply bb cream or foundation. I have quite a few for different products.

I recently bought these to keep in my handbag

www.boots.com/en/Real-Techniques-Core-Collection-1403_1252038/

Super price for a nice collection.

To apply foundation or bb cream I use the flat foundation brush and start on my forehead and sweep out wards towards hairline, then I vertically apply downwards between eyes and onto my nose. I sweep across eyelids then under eyes in one direction from nose to outer eye. Then I apply to cheeks from nose to ear direction and as I get nearer to chin I start to brush more downwards. Hope that makes sense! I use light strokes and tiny amount of product and build it up as I go along as you can add easily but it's harder to do if you've dabbed on too much product!

If I want to add concealer I use the small brush to delicately paint on or over anything that needs concealing!

If I want to add powder I first apply with a sponge or puff that comes with the powder then I use the biggest brush which is the softest and I use circular buffing movements to softly blend blend blend.

I use Chanel foundation and was told it was designed to be applied in downward strokes but not sure if this applies to all foundation. I use a flat brush to apply

MrsFlorrick · 01/11/2013 09:29

Bumping for the morning crowd. Any other suggestions before I hit the shops? Thanks

I used to use a flat brush but the more I've aged the more I can see the streaks - might be the mag mirror tho'! In recent years the flathead brushes are taking over a they can be used to buff product in all directions to avoid any potential streaking. I use the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.

Check out Pixiwoo's YouTube video for Real Technique Brushes for great tips.

UsedToBeNDP · 01/11/2013 09:54

I don't like trad flat fdtn brushes, I find them streaky and awkward to use. I like to buff fdtn in instead, like others I really rate the Real Techniques brushes (even if they are a bit tacky to look at with the colours). The brushes I like and own for fdtn are,

their buffing brush (very slightly domed top, in the Core Collection)

the stippling brush (lighter coverage, flat top, less dense, looks 'spiky')

expert face brush (v dense, 'squashed' ovalish shaped domed head, ime gives the most coverage)

This is my 2nd RT brush evangelism post in 24hrs, I'm either going to get deleted for trolling or I'm going to get commission Wink

I have used this one from the body shop for years but then I let an urban decay consultant try their foundation on me using their brush and it was so good I bought it (the foundation wasn't very good though!)

MrsFlorrick · 01/11/2013 10:05

Used. Fab!!! Thanks Thanks

I am def looking at real techniques brushes.

The application and brush type advice is much appreciated. Grin

Peasy. Thanks for tip on pixy vid. I am not very expert at makeup application. I used to have beautiful skin where I could just slap on any foundation mixed with moisturiser and ready to go no concealer needed or powder but now I am an old crone with wrinkles starting to happen and rosacea and I look a bit Angry most of the time so expert application required. Sad

Oh and they are very often on 3 for 2 / buy 1, get one 1/2 price at Boots too, so a bit of a bargain.

peasypeeler · 01/11/2013 10:14

I hear you on the crone moments. I'm 50 next year and still wonder where my 17yr old face has gone Grin It's still there somewhere - I just have to work harder! Good luck x

SundaySimmons · 01/11/2013 11:12

I now put my make up on in my car!

It's the best natural light possible. I prep my face with primer if using but apply my make up in my car mirror as it makes me concentrate on each area at a time and I get a natural look and I wear a lot of make up!

Thankfully my car is only six foot away from my front door so I can just jump in without anyone seeing me.

MrsFlorrick · 01/11/2013 13:46

Arses. Boots in Bluewater have sold out of real techniques foundation brushes. Probably due to the special offer.

Sunday. Wait until I was in the car to apply my face??!! With a 2yo and a 4yo?? Erm.no not at my age.

The crone thing is awful. I just woke up one morning and looked old. I blame the DC Grin I was fresh faced and dewy skinned until the first one arrives. Argh.

If only I wasn't such a big chicken I would have Botox or something. That said I don't think they can Botox your neck can they?

I bought mine in Superdrug. Amazon do them too :)

RafaellaNhaKyria · 01/11/2013 14:35

Thanks AuntieMaggie, i had an Ulta consultant trying to get me to buy that Urban Decay brush yesterday and I balked at the price, although I liked the brush. If it's a really good one, I may go back and invest in one Grin

MrsFlorrick · 02/11/2013 10:43

Got two in the end!! Superdrug as advised Grin
And it was buy one get one half price. Smile

I got the stipple one and the other one as advised. Will try both and see which works best.
