Please help me conceal my utterly hideous skin

I have always suffered from terrible skin, massive blocked pores and spots so.mych so that I was called strawberry nose at school Sad

I have tried creams from my gp but they have never improved it. I am currently bf so a trip to the gp would be pointless for the time being.

Does anyone know if any miracle make up that would make me look presentable and cover up the blackheads and scars?

I did once go to a Bobbi Brown counter and have my make up done but she was horrified by the fact that the foundation just 'sat' on my skin and wouldn't rub in so that didn't make me feel too great!

www.carolinehirons.com

Start with your skincare, read any of the 'cheat sheets' listed on the right to get started.

Covering over won't help as much as unblocking will.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 29/10/2013 21:54

If foundation just sits on your skin maybe the bed you can do there is a BB cream? Not sure if the mineral foundations would be any good?

There used to be strips you could get that would remove blackheads when you put them on your nose and pulled them off,if that helps

DearDinah · 29/10/2013 21:57

I have large red spots all around my chin & forehead, i use body shop primer, then no 7 stay perfect mixed together with rimmel lasting finish (for the correct shade) then cover it with rimmel translucent pressed powder, my skin gets very oily but it seems to last most if the day, have you ever been to see a nutritionist about your skin?
I'm going at the weekend as I'm convinced diet plays a big part

gingerbreadshoes · 29/10/2013 21:58

Thanks I will have a read of that link.

I have used the strips before but they just leave huge gaping holes where the blackheads have been removed.

DearDinah I haven't ever seen one but I'd be very interested to hear how you get on.

Hi Gingerbreadshoes, its tough having bad skin I know. I would also agree you should try sorting out skincare first. Double cleansing with hot cloths every evening and alpha H would be good for your skin. Read the link above Caroline - Beauty mouth. When you mentioned strawberry nose it made me think of acne rosecea, read up on that and if thats the case then gentle skincare and your GP should give you some kind of antibiotic (but unsure what when bf).

good luck

Have you tried bare minerals OP?

gingerbreadshoes · 30/10/2013 05:11

No I haven't tried bare minerals as I am clueless about make up. Where would I find it please?

With regards to strswberry nose, it was said because my nose is covered in blackheads so resembles the skin of a strawberry buy doesn't have the redness.

I have rosacea and use Estée Lauder double wear, now I only wear it when I want to cover up completely because in all honesty no make up will improve the condition of my skin, it's bad for it, but there are times I need a mask!!

valiumredhead · 30/10/2013 08:12

I would go to debenhams if you're near one, and see Bare minerals lady there.

Try the neutrogena black head face scrub, it's from boots and is in an orange and white tube, it's about a fiver. My ds really gets on well with it.

I'd gently steam then squeeze using tissue wrapped fingers then splash with child water to help shrink back the pores.

SundaySimmons · 30/10/2013 08:20

It seems to me that you are able to remove the blackheads but then the open pores are a problem? Once the blackheads have been removed then they a toner to help shrink them.

But you don't want to strip your skin so that it produces more oil so leave your face a few minutes after the toner and apply a gentle moisturiser.

I have horrendous hormonal acne at the moment. My GP has given me zineryt which has an antibiotic in it. It is suitable for pregnant ladies.

I also find the ritual of cleansing, toning, moisturising daily and exfoliating every 2-3 days will help regenerate your skin and get rid of dead skin cells/flakiness which will help make up sit better.

Also yes to a primer, smashbox do a good one. They do a lighter version for congested skin.

I use: Avene cleanance cleansing gel, clinique toner 4 (I have really oily skin) clinique exfoliator, clinique ddml nightly and avene cleanance k lotion in the morning.

50shadesofmeh · 30/10/2013 09:14

I had awful skin growing up its fairly good now but the only thing that helped me was going on dianette pill from my Gp I imagine it controlled the hormones that were causing my acne.

valiumredhead · 30/10/2013 09:19

Wrt the smash box primer, it is exactly the same ingredients as lanacane anti chaff gel but it's only a fiver. Best primer I've ever used.

Personally I'd concentrate on getting your skin better before using make up.

Hope you find something that worksSmile

gingerbreadshoes · 30/10/2013 09:46

Thank you so much for all of your advice, I am feeling much more positive about it now Smile

I would make an appointment with a dermatologist and get your skin sorted. Forget your GP, those suffering long term with problem skin need to see a specialist.

I would not personally recommend the use of products aimed at teenage skin - adult acne is very different from normal teenage spots - and harsh products can strip skin of its healthy barrier, leading to stressed skin, which then leads to more spots.

What I would recommend is that you use gentle non-comedogenic (ie won't block pores) products on your face. Brands like Avene are good. Their extremely gentle cleanser cleans thoroughly without stripping the skin, and even their rich moisturisers are non comedogenic. La Roche Posay is also a good brand to try, as are Vichy and Nuxe. Cetaphil moisturiser is suitable for acne sufferers as, again, it is non comedogenic and won't block pores.

It may be that use of a prescription strength retinoid will improve your skin, but again, I would go and see a dermatologist to discuss this.

Avoid mineral oil and shea butter based things. The link to caroline Hirons will really help you understand how important ingredients are in skincare. Never mind if it's cheap or expensive - what's in it?

Avoid foaming cleansers too. And apricot kernel scrubs Shock
