Have you had a makeover in a department store..?

I have always wanted to but feel a bit intimidated by the over perfectly made up women on the counters.

Has anyone had one, and did you get good results? Is there any brand you would recommend?

Don't want to come out looking orange with purple eyes or something!!

I've had a Benefit makeover which I found really useful as they made up one side of my face and then let me use the products to recreate the look on the other side. I didn't feel pressured to buy and only left with the products that I was pleased with, certainly not every product they used. They also offered me the option to choose products I was actually interested in trying out, not just the stuff they picked

I had one of the Bobbi Brown make overs.
I would always book one now if I wanted to invest in a brand.

Bobbi Brown - see their website. They offer them as complimentary 'lessons' which helps avoid any awkwardness about buying products at the end. Natural look is their thing so minimal chance of emerging orange. Especially worth it before making a major purchase like foundation.

Laura Mercier are also really good: they have a fab make-
up artist working in our local House of Fraser (full blown make-over was £25 redeemable against any purchase. Not sure if that's still the deal though?).

I want a mac makeover at house of Fraser .

Are they expensive ?

Olddear · 29/10/2013 08:38

Yes! Against my will! One very forceful beauty consultant ( benefit) she made me look like coco the clown on crack, she put black mascara on my rather poor eyelashes, I looked as if I'd gone 15 rounds with Ali and lost them all!!! Had to run to the nearest loo (the other end of the store!!!!) and try to take the lot off with a tissue!! Never again....

Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier are both great for this. MAC is too but they tend to be more heavy handed IME. I would always look at the make up being worn by the MUA in question and if you don't like it/think she looks orange then avoid!

I have had benefit and bobbi brown. The benefit one was good - they listened to what I said about my make up requirements and advised me well. I was pleased with how I ended up looking and have brought several products from there since.

Bobbi Brown was another story. They plastered makeup on so heavy despite me asking them not to. The make up they did was awful and I asked them to re-do it as I was going to try on bridesmaid dresses that day and didn't want to go round the shops looking like an idiot. When I didn't buy any products at the end the sales women got pretty shirty with me and my friend.

Thanks for those! Guess some of them you have to pay for then? Oh well would be worth it if I find some new products I like. Just a bit wary as I once had one from a trendy make up artist Time Out raved about. It was awful! He put gold eye make up under my eyes. I looked ill and felt embarassed walking around afterwards...

I've had lots, never had to pay for any of them and they are delighted to make you up.

I had a Clarins one once - it was rubbish. Ditto Benefit - clown cheeks. I hate other people putting make up on me, they do it wrong, especially eye make up. And they always want to 'give me some colour' or 'warm up' my skin so that it doesn't match my neck Hmm I did my own wedding make up because I hate it so much. I can imagine Bobbi Brown MUAs being quite good though, as they usually look lovely.

pudtat · 30/10/2013 18:24

I tend to start by saying that I am interested in how things wear and that I don't react to anything so want the list of things they've used but won't buy til I have had it on for the day. Never been a problem. Recently had a Bobbie brown makeover and while I didn't like the foundation (actually it was bb cream) have since bought eyeshadow and cleansing products as a direct result.

Laura mercier were also good, worked hard to get colour matched (not orange!Grin) but they don't have any of their tinted moisturiser in stock and haven't had for weeks. Anyone able to buy this at the mo? They say they're waiting for stock from USA and whole of john lewis is out (my only local stockist). Porcelain shade. Sorry to hijack thread Blush.

You could try Space NK if there's one nearby - I've had a couple at MAC which I've always been pleased with, but they've been for specific occasions rather than just curiosity, so the heavy look wasn't too bad. I've had makeovers with Laura Mercier and NARS at Space NK and both were great - no hard sell, no radioactive glow Smile

Benefit makeover was dreadful. I found their sales patter boring and distracting. Plus I ended up orange.

I didn't fare well with illasmasqua either.

Best by far has been Estée Lauder and Dior for me.
