Max mara has lovely ones but they are expensive

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/10/2013 17:30

To be fair,on the winter coat front, for style it has to be wool.Parkas are grim.Puffas as grim.Waterproof coats are just,well... (still seeing what the Geraldine is like in real life first though!)

Wool all the way.But it sucks if it gets soaked as it need to air dry and can end up smelling like a wet dog!

BunnyLebowski · 27/10/2013 17:33

All the merrell type coats fawned over on here are frumptastic.

Fine for outdoor activity but not remotely stylish.

Hopasholic · 27/10/2013 18:52

I've been looking for ages. I ordered the Merrell Haven in peppercorn after I'd seen a friend in one she bought last year. I was soooo disappointed, it was like an army blanket Shock really stiff and horrible shape. I think last years were probably made a bit better.

I need a practical coat for standing pitch side and I'm really pleased with this

It's so warm it's fitted so not too mitchelin man Grin

Tweet2tweet · 27/10/2013 19:01

Didrikson Veronica is good. Practical but parka like and 100% waterproof. Most stylish you will get in waterproof.
There's also a brand called Creenstone that do stylish waterproof coats. Very ££ though and aimed at a more mature clientele IMO.

FoxyHarlow123 · 27/10/2013 19:13

This may be aimed at the horsey market but it's divine www.dressagedeluxe.co.uk/Shop.asp?viewmode=vp&pid=2555

LostMarbles99 · 27/10/2013 19:14

is this very horsey yah?

Just looked at the Didrickson Veronica and it's worse than the Ellenwood!Looks like a bog standard one to me with a funny hood, why is it so pricey?

LostMarbles99 · 27/10/2013 19:18

I also like this one that someone else linked to. It's v £££

I have two down coats from max Mara and whilst they are things of beauty, they aren't very waterproof. I have just bought what I hope is a stylish parka type coat from mango at John Lewis. Sort cannot link I am on the kindle and its enough of a challenge to write a message, will do later if I get on the proper computer.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 27/10/2013 19:50

Here it is www.johnlewis.com/mango-faux-fur-hooded-coat/p775638?colour=Black.

I got it in the beige colour which is darker than the picture. Very happy with it, seems good quality and feels as if it should be reasonably waterproof.

I wouldn't have it as a posh evening coat - I rejected in in favour of one of the maxmara ones on Friday night, but that's only because I knew it wasn't going to rain Grin. But I should get a lot of use out of it for work, school runs, freezing at the side of the rugby pitch and going shopping. it may not be super stylish but it's a lot better than my North Face walking jacket !

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/10/2013 19:56

As far as quilted coats go that's not bad at all

theoriginalandbestrookie · 27/10/2013 20:12

That feels like damning with fain praise trip trap Grin, but at least it should stop me getting ignored like I was in Whistles by the salesman because of my awful walking jacket/handbag combo . His loss though as the Whistles parkas were quite nice too, but a bit too parka-ish.

I have tried on a number of the Aigle jackets and they are gorgeously comfy, but they are quite bulky so unless it's darkest winter and you are dead thin, one (me) would probably end up looking rather bulked up.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/10/2013 20:30

No,it's actually quite nice for a quilted coat!I'm pleasantly surprised as I hate quilted coats with a passion!Like the fur lining on it too

BranchingOut · 27/10/2013 20:31

I am on the same hunt. Maybe I should give up and just bung one of these over my old wool coat!

bargain

JustThisOnceOrTwiceOrThrice · 27/10/2013 20:48

I was excited when i saw this thread but as usual the majority of people on s and b have a budget multiple times my own.

Im looking for a winter coat with a hood but can't spend much at all. Saw one in hm for 30 something quid and don't think I'll be able to afford it. It doesn't even look that warm!

Tweet2tweet · 27/10/2013 20:52

If you're on a budget, Sainsbury's had a lovely waxed parka for about £40 I think. Dark navy with a tartan lining and faux fur trim on the hood.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/10/2013 20:58

JustThisOnce have you had a scour of eBay? Can pick up some bargains and it's helpful with a tight budget

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/10/2013 21:15

Katz thanks so much for posting that link!Just found perfect waterproof coats for ds for school and out of school Smile

JustThisOnceOrTwiceOrThrice · 27/10/2013 21:18

Yes i do use ebay. For most of my clothes actually. Its just so common for it to turn up and be a bit disappointing and shit.

ProtectiveMother · 27/10/2013 21:22

Right well I don't like any of these coats at all! :-) I am looking for a hooded one too though. Must be good in rain...

LividofLondon · 28/10/2013 08:55
