And it's not too bad actually!!!!!! My hair was in vile condition and is thinning and falling out so I reckoned that if my home-hairdressing attempt didn't end well, I was planning on having a lot taken off anyhow and it couldn't look worse than it was already looking.

I'd looked up old threads and watched the link to the youtube clip and set forth on dry, freshly washed and dried hair. DP says it looks ok! Am SO chuffed as really didn't have a clue what I was actually doing or where to site the ponytail. Suppose the proof of the pudding will come when I next wash and attempt to dry it. But for a first attempt I'm quite proud of myself.

Ooh glad it came out well. I tried it but it's more layered on one side than the other. Apart from that it's ok.

RaisingthedeadArizona · 25/10/2013 17:54

It was scary. Mine is definitely 'choppy' looking and no way can it be even (esp as hacked it with kitchen scissors) but at present it looks better than before. Was this attempt your first or have you done it before?

First attempt. I've even cut in a fringe which I think looks pretty ok. Just saved myself £30!

It's good isn't it!
I do mine while it's wet then cut into the front layers to thin them out when it's dry.

I also do a second cut to make the length shorter without cutting the layers too short. That helps with the choppiness too.

I sort of make 2 pony tails and just cut the 2nd one. Not sure that makes any sense sorry!

I've had more compliments on my "lovely layered hair" than I ever had when I paid someone. I have think long curly hair that looks bonkers however you massacre cut it.

Dillydollydaydream · 26/10/2013 12:51

I'm tempted to try it out in on my dd(10). She has lovely long hair 1/2 way down her back.

Ummm well after I started this thread I decided to take a bit more off yesterday. I woke up today and it looks a bit of a bugger. I love the shape and the layers, but I'm going to have to get a real hairdresser to even everything up as they're absolutely all over the place. But on the plus side it's made me realise I look far better with a fringe and layers than I did with it all one length :)

First rule of the MN haircut, once you've made the cut step away from the scissors until you've washed and dried it.

I've cut my own for a couple of years. I've even got a one length bob after watching a You Tube video.

MrPricklepants · 26/10/2013 17:27

dilly don't do it. You are not a hairdresser and you really don't want to wreck your daughter's beautiful hair.

bec0901 · 26/10/2013 21:22

Glad you posted this because you reminded me about the great ponytail haircut method! I did it today on my hair and it looks great :-)

My hair is admittedly really easy to cut because it is shoulder length wavy hair so getting a perfectly straight line isn't very important!

Vix1980 · 26/10/2013 21:39

Can someone link to this please or tell me what to search for on youtube, is it actually called the mn haircut?

Desperately need my hair cutting (hasnt been done since ahem... April).
