thinning hair

I'm thinning at the front on top, currently have mid-length hair in a pony/bun. Scalp is showing through a bit.

Can't wear a fringe, because its too thin/wispy, and just soaks through and sticks to my forehead when I have a hot flush. ie several times an hour day Blush Angry Sad

Really would like some kind of style, but hairdresser just doesn't know what to suggest.

I'm a bit frumpy , fattish, cross between oval, diamond and square face shape (pretty wierd-looking!) square forehead, pointy chin, jowls hang down from wide cheekbones, piggy eyes, big mouth.

Crumbs, just realised what a freak babe I am Grin

Is there a style ... or should I resort to a beannie/bag over my head Grin

Have you been to the GP about your thinning hair to see if you can get a referral? It may be dermatological and things like steroid injections in the scalp (I know, eek) may prevent further loss. MY DM has been through all this & wishes she had been referred earlier, although it may not have made any difference.

In DM's case, she now has lovely wigs through the NHS & is back to her confident & glamorous self.

I have fine, thin hair and couldn't carry off a fringe. I'm not sure on style myself but my first thought when reading your post is whether you could try another hairdresser. Maybe ask around for local hairdressers with a specialism or experience in thinning hair or female balding. Surely a good hairdresser experienced in this area will have suggestions from treatments to extensions for volume to styles to products?? Rather than just saying "don't know"!

The hairdresser doesn't know what to suggest? I think you need a new hairdresser!

I second going to the GP. I've heard that certain vitamin deficiencies can cause this. Do you dye your hair alot? Had a baby recently?

FergusSingsTheBlues · 25/10/2013 11:08

Apparently biotin supplements can work wonders on thin hair. I've just started taking it to offset post natal shed....

guffaw · 27/10/2013 00:45

not had a baby, and haven't dyed for 30 years, but am menopausal, trouble is I hate going to GP's, so have avoided. (seeing dr's just makes you ill, in my experience) Hmm am a veggie so take an iron supplement.

I think I am the problem rather than the hairdresser, to be fair -I go infrequently and expect her to find a 'style' that suits my, err, unusual looks, plus takes me no time to do in the morning, plus doesn't lose any off the length, so I can pin/pony tail up, so basically is a trim of my one length, thin, dry, frizzy tresses Grin

I had a short crop about 5 years ago that I loved, (it was easy) but everyone told me was very unkind and I couldn't carry it off. Everyone prefers it mid length, but 1, I'm bored, and 2, I think it shows how thin at the front it is, almost comb over effect - Confused

Try a graduated side fringe. It's the best style for thin hair, whether it's thinning or not. It can look good even if it's wispy.

smilesandsun · 27/10/2013 09:43

i read an article recently of someone that had thinning hair and didn't see the gp for a long long time, she had a thyroid problem and could have stopped the hairloss by seeking advice earlier.

guffaw · 27/10/2013 22:53

thanks,

I guess I'll have to see GP really.

Will discuss graduated side fringe with hairdresser - cheers

How did you get on with your GP and hairdresser? I like the sound of the graduated side fringe.

Shruti04 · 13/11/2013 12:27

You should go for any good hairdresser to get advice about your hair. They can best suggest you for hair style dear.

MaureenFry · 13/11/2013 12:51

Google images for Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Princess Charlene hairstyles. They all have fine hair but find styles that look great. OK the fact that they are rather beautiful women helps but we mere mortals can take inspiration from them Grin

Get a new hairdresser and have a chat about how highlights/lowlights can add depth to your hair.
