Is it ridiculous to wear a black leather biker if I don't ride a motorbike?

A couple of people this morning decided to crack jokes along the lines of "Where's your motorbike?" which you can imagine went down like a lead balloon.

Please tell me they are imbeciles.

I'm 31 if it makes a difference.

It is honestly not something that would occur to me any more than seeing someone wearing a tracksuit as 'leisure wear' or denim to take things to their logical conclusion.

Guess I might change my mind if you were wearing leather trousers and biker boots too. Grin

WildThongsHeartString · 20/10/2013 17:19

They are imbeciles ( maybe jealous of how good you looked )
I've got 'riding' boots and have never been on a horse either.

Take no notice of the idiots - My DD actually has 'biker jacket' on her forthcoming birthday (or Xmas) list, as her BF's sister has just got one (no she doesn't own a motorbike) & DD thinks it looks great - She informs us that apparently they are a must have fashion accessory, so if you like it then stuff everyone else.

whatiswrongwithyou · 20/10/2013 17:55

They definitely are a "must have" accessory! It seemed like every other women I saw this morning in my local supermarket was wearing one - must have been mumsnetters!

BanoffeeSplitz · 20/10/2013 23:48

Unless you have taken to wearing something like this, then they are imbeciles (and probably jealous). Wink

It's not ridiculous, but I think that leather biker jackets can look a bit try too hard if you're not careful. Just my opinion. The style looks better in a fabric.

50ShadesOfMaybe · 21/10/2013 10:17

I hope not: I've got about 3!

(DH used to wear one when we first met and said he was once asked in a pub what bike he had. The tough looking biker type gave him such a look of contempt when he confessed he had never been on a motorbike in his life!)

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 10:22

Well, hmm, I don't know. I agree that the people saying those things are unfunny idiots.

But I do ride bikes and I do think that it can be a bit silly to wear a proper biker jacket if you don't - I mean obviously there are degrees of how bikerish they are, and a lot of fashion leather jackets look great, but to wear a proper jacket that was built for a bike, is probably a bit daft if you don't use it for riding.

Do you have a link so we can judge?! Grin

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 10:28

I used to wear one like this. With trousers naturally.

Financeprincess has a good point - biker style jackets in unexpected colours or textures usually look really good. And they are obviously not for real biking so no room for piss-taking.

But classic 50s Marlon Brando style black leather biker jackets are such a - well - classic that they are fine really. I have just got one to replace the battered leather jacket I nicked from my mum years ago which is finally coming apart at the seams. My only issue with it is that they are just a bit too obviously 'on trend' this year (yes maybe sort of try hard)... since I bought mine I have noticed them on bloody everyone!

But they are genuinely practical for cool rainy days in spring & autumn so I expect to get years of use out of mine. And if not, then hopefully it will be classic enough for a child or even grandchild to steal one day Grin.

BanoffeeSplitz · 21/10/2013 16:25

Though if you are wearing with leather trousers & carrying a helmet, I reserve the right to judge Wink.

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 16:33

Erm, no. Was it two people on two separate occasions? That's odd, and they're wrong, unless it was some kind of hell's angel jacket actually designed for biking. I've worn a black leather biker for about 8 years solid now and no one's ever said anything like that Confused

ellesabe · 22/10/2013 09:54

Thanks all - I am hereby reassured that I don't look like a tit Grin

It was two separate people on separate occasions. The first was a 40(ish) woman who I have always considered to be quite stylish which is why I perhaps questioned my judgement!

The second was a 70(ish) man who is obviously clueless. He said it to me after a hellish night with a teething baby though and I had to seriously restrain myself from punching him in the face making a very unhelpful comment...

I reckon women can wear them as a fashion, but men have to be more careful as they may be approached by a slightly overweight born-again biker, who has read too many copies of Back Street Heroes, wanting to talk about his pre-unit side-valve M21.

Are biker jackets really back in fashion again. I wonder if mine still fits. I think I also still have my biker boots, with the metal plate on one sole that's so useful for winding the kickstart of a single cylinder B40 up to tdc then jumping on it.

Bike Bores... don't go anywhere near 'em!
