Can anyone who's got the Boden cashmere crew neck jumper from this year tell me how it wears?

Is the quality ok and does it bobble much? It's just arrived and feels a bit itchy to me - not too bad, but don't want to keep it if it's not going to last. I've got some Uniqlo cashmere and it's lovely and non itchy, non bobbly, but I much prefer the shape and fit and weight of the Boden cashmere.

Hopeful bump :)

I shouldn't think anyone's worn it yet

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 08:58

Really?! I've been wearing my woolly jumpers for weeks now!

Maybe because I live in Yorkshire and, in my DH's words, am a 'southern fairy'.

I think all Boden knitwear is very disappointing, cashmere or not.

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 09:13

That is my fear. I only have one Boden jumper - it's merino and hasn't bobbled so far, and has washed well, but there's something about this cashmere I don't like. I think it needs to go back.

I don't mind those big bobbles that you get with good wool and that pull off easily, it's when a top immediately gets loads of little bobbles and looks worn that annoys me.

Have you read the reviews on the site? Sorry if that's obvious and you have! There are usually lots and give a good overview.

All my Boden cashmere is fine except one or two which did bobble quite a bit, but I haven't got any this year.

The scratchiness would probably diminish with washing - I got the most beautiful cashmere cardi from Boden a few years ago that seemed quite thin and disappointing at first, but after a few washes was super-soft and fluffy. It has lasted the best of any cashmere I've bought and still looks pristine.

But agree it is too expensive to keep if not 100% happy!

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 10:04

Aha, good info Spooky, thank you! I've read the reviews on the site but don't tend to rely too heavily on them as they are usually very positive and I like to get the harsher MN verdict too Wink

I've got one from last year. It's lovely and soft but has bobbled badly already.

LeoandBoosmum · 21/10/2013 10:22

Boden's cashmere is dire ime. I've bought two pieces and they've gone back - too thin and scratchier than lambswool! I'd look on Ebay for really good quality lightly used cashmere than 'invest' in a new piece from Boden.

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 10:34

No not secondhand eBay cashmere! My friend gave me a cashmere scarf she got from eBay and it was riddled with moth holes! Even if it doesn't have the holes the little bastards could have laid their indestructible eggs in it... I have moth paranoia.

Really...? Thanks for the warning! I'd been eyeing up some cashmere pieces on there... Plus, I didn't even know moths laid eggs!
The White Company has nice cashmere and you can often get 20% off :)

LeoandBoosmum · 21/10/2013 10:40

Oh, I meant to add that John Lewis' own cashmere stuff is really nice, very soft and unbeatable for the price.

They do lay eggs, and apparently the common suggestion that you can put cashmere in the freezer for a few weeks to kill off any eggs is a myth - they just go dormant in the cold and can hatch later!

That is a combination of mum and internet wisdom - I have no evidence for it but don't like to take chances with my knitwear collection :)

Thanks...I'm going to get some cedar wood things to hang in the wardrobe... I'm always spotting moths in my house!

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 16:00

Do you mean normal moths? I don't think the average moth you see in your house eats clothes, so don't worry about that. The things that eat your clothes are the caterpillars of clothes moths and you don't see them often, either as caterpillars or as moths. Anyway, I use Zensect moth balls and have never had any moths - they change colour when you need to get new ones and they smell quite nice.

I have the navy jumper from this year and have worn it several times and no bobbling.

I was in the white co the other day and their cashmere didn't feel any better. Neither are the quality of brora but then they are about a third of the price.

I don't personally rate uniqlo's knitwear - the shapes are odd and the colours not quite right.

Also with boden you know that if you wear it several times, wash it and are unhappy with it - they'll refund you no questions asked. The White Co's customer service is nowhere near as good unfortunately.

ElizabethBathory · 21/10/2013 17:17

Good point re. Boden customer service MrsCB!

I get Brora on eBay and take my chances with the moths!

I have the cashmere crew neck in caramel from Boden this year. The fit is good and I think it's well made. Got a hefty discount.
