HoC Winter make-up questions - please advise

Contrary to my gut feeling - I'm a sultry winter rather than an autumn. I've always thought I had a warm skin tone but having had my colours done I can see how much better I look in winter colours.

So - does this mean I have to ditch the warm stuff in my make-up bag like bronzers and brown/gold eyeliners. My eyes are very dark brown and I've always leant towards brown and gold colours but my eyeshadows now should be grey and plums apparently.

It's REALLY hard to get my head around my clothes colours being cool but nigh on impossible for me to see my make-up as cool.

I've always thought I am a gold/warm tone has anyone else had a similar experience or can advise me. My skin tone is olive which I thought was a warm tone but apparently not Confused

Hi Easypeeler I'm a sultry winter too. My skin is very pale rather than olive so I've never gone for bronzers, but yes winters should really avoid them. I did used to wear a lot of brown eye makeup as I felt it worked well with my v dark brown eyes. I switched to black and charcoal greys and they do look better - I like Mac Paint pot in blackground - a soft black with silvery shimmer, and Mac eye shadow in typographic. Also wear lots of pure black liquid liner. For blusher I like Mac pink swoon and frankly scarlet, or benefit benetint. Lots of lipstick recs on the Winter thread. Hth!

Thanks so much, that does help! I bought the recommended HoC lipsticks which are blue-based pink or red - need to try a cool foundation or at least a neutral as my yellow based one must be wrong.

Hmm, I'm not sure about foundation. Did the HoC lady advise about that? I would have thought that if your skin is yellow-based, you need a yellow-based foundation to match it. I was matched up recently by an Estee Lauder make up lady and she was really good - they have yellow, neutral and pink based colours so you could see what she says.

just for your info, I'm winter and recently had a style day which did include makeup including foundation. I don't know what kind of winter I am I'm afraid, but the following may or may not help you:

I bought 3 HOC lipsticks on the consultant's recommendation (2 pinks and one red) and they are numbers 28, (red) 62 (pink) and 711 (pink). I like them all.

She told me the blusher I was already wearing was perfect - it was Benefit Hervana.

She also told me the foundation I was already wearing was perfect - it was Max Factor CC cream no. 50 Natural.
I also wear Boots Botanics BB Cream, Light
and Revlon Age Defying DNA foundation No. 10, Bare Buff which is a proper foundation.
I am certain they suit my skin colourwise as well (if she said the one I was wearing on the day was good, then my other favourites at home presumably are as well - they are all similar if not very very close colourwise).

finally she advised black mascara & eyeliner (despite all that stuff that at a certain age it's too harsh and you should go for dark brown - don't know how old you are)! Also because of the shape of my eyes not to bother with eyeshadow which was a huge relief because I've always found it OTT on me, but that is presumably because my style is apparently "gamine" which is a bit "less is more". Again, don't know what your style is. HTH Smile

Hi easy definitely stick around on the winter thread and if you can be arsed to read back all 34 pages there are some make up recommendations.

As a blonde I always used to wear brown, grey or navy eyeliner but since having my colours done I've ditched the brown. I did try purple but it looks like a black eye on me! I also haven't worn bronzer since either. My powder and blusher have stayed the same. The biggest revelation for me has been lipsticks. I can't believe I went through 39 years of life thinking that neutral lip colours looked good. I look far better with colour!

easypeeler · 20/10/2013 14:15

That's really great to know, thanks everyone! I think I was getting in a flap because if I'm a Winter then I must be cool toned but actually I have quite a yellow based foundation but assumed that was for warm tones only.

I tie myself up in knots easily.

Thanks a lot for the actual brand colours and recommendations - I'll check them out.

My lipsticks are 54, 27 and 673

When you've spent your adult life wearing the ubiquitous pinky-brown lippie - carmine red is a bit of a shock Grin

I will hop back to the winter thread QC, thanks!

Oh yes, it took me a while to summon up the courage to wear bright lipsticks! I've realised that fuschia looks much better on me than red. The revlon lip butters are good for a subtle bit if colour-pink raspberry and red velvet.

NewNameforNewTerm · 20/10/2013 16:19

I'm a jewel winter, so it is maybe a bit different, but I bought a pinky-red blusher and a red and a pink lipstick from HoC. I also bought some Revlon lipbutters mentioned elsewhere on this thread as I find them easier to wear than the HoC ones which as a bit of a shock to the system. For base I use bare minerals in their palest colour and I wear lilac / purple eyeshadows, navy blue eyeliner and black mascara when I can be bothered with full makeup.

So Travelin does that mean that someone with olive skin who has cool colouring would have blue veins?

Always worth popping into make up counters to see what they recommend and try out without buying (or buying a trial size) until you are confident they have it right. Body Shop have properly-lit mirrors for it. I now use a Bare Minerals powder foundation because it's so non-drying but it took me 2 trial pots and 3 sales assistants to find the right shade.
I'm a blue-eyed winter and cool brown eyeshadow really suits me actually, good for doing my favorite Marlene Dietrich look (see PixieWoo on Youtube!). I use Rimmel's Orion quartet and Max Factor's cream-to-powder has a good beige (lasts for days if you are a skank like meBlush).
I think blue eye make up is ok if you have delicate, feminine features but it makes me look like a drag queenSad, being more striking than pretty.
