If you like it, and it works for you (and you are OK with the cost) then buy it! Better to have clothes that you like and feel good in than try and buy things you think will help you fit in but you don't really like and then worry that you've not got it right anyway.

That's what I tell my kids anyway (non uniform school). Personally I just open the car door and bugger off on the days when the kids are lucky enough to get a lift :) In the days when I walked them to school I just wore whatever I was wearing, I didn't really fit in with the other parents anyway I don't think dressing differently would have made a lot of difference!

I've just treated myself to a new coat, from river island. Warm, waterproof, ok to look at. No hood tho!

I wear jeans, converse and this coat in winter. But on sunny days with no chance of getting wet I also wear a boucle jacket, a blazer or a wool peacoat.

There's a mixture of stuff on our school run. Most are casual in jeans or there's gym/running gear or work outfits. Dd now in y3 and I haven't encountered any bitchiness or stares yet as everyone's lovely.

Unless I'm in gym gear I accessorise with lipstick. As a sahm if we don't dress up for the school run, when can we?

Not keen on the coat, even for half the price. It looks dull, it might look great on though.

Comfy stuff. Leggings and tunic tops normally. Flip flops in summer. Boots in winter. Parka coat. Waterproof wear is essential when raining.

There is a Mum who turns up in leather trousers and very high wedges and I think she looks like she is going nightclubbing. She looks silly and overdressed for doing school run. She reminds me a bit of Victoria Beckham mainly because she always wears such high footwear!

And no im not jealous!

I really dislike parkas and look dreadful in them,most waterproof coats I find just yuck! Hence my problem lol

I don't like parkas either but I see them as a necessary evil of living in a country where the weather is cold and wet. I resisted for many years but then I got a grip and have chose to be warm, dry and happy. I bought a North Face Arctic parka a few years ago, I know I resemble a yeti but I am so smugly warm that I don't care!

Unless I am going to work I usually wear this onesie to mark the time of year. If going to work then smart trousers, a top and a cardigan.

Fortunately the school run days are long past for me, which is just as well because I was really slummy...... We lived in the countryside and the school was quite a car ride away. I'd put put big coat on over the top of my nightwear and drive into the local market town and drop DD off without getting out of the car...
And go back and have a lovely long, relaxing bath without interruptions...!!

Totally know where you are coming from, op. When Dd1 started school I was forced, for the first time in my life, to buy a sensible coat... One that was actually, really waterproof, and not just showerproof, as well as warm. And I also had to buy a pair of boots that can only be described as hiking boots. Both horrible but needed to be done as sod's law states that it shall always rain at school pick up even if the rest of the day we have been basking in glorious sunshine and because waiting around in school playgrounds is a cold, cold business!

Oh,boots!I have not succumb to practical shoes.I think I'd die if I did!!!!!
I tend to go for nice looking boots (including knee high),with decent wedge heel but a gripping rubber bottom on them.Not easy to find though!!!

This isn't TOO bad,and it's my favourite colour.But I have flaming copper red hair!

I wear my naice smart wool coats on the school run (because they're what I've got - I don't do parka's or wind-breakers.) And then if it's wet I just take an umberella. I always walk whatever the weather. It has never once occurred to me that other mothers might be secretly judging!

What I tend to do if I'm just going straight back home is to shove on a t'shirt and jumper and a pair of leggings or black trousers, and then just button up my coat over the lot, chuck on some ballet pumps or black leather riding style boots (depending on the weather), wind a scarf around my neck and I'm good to go. Button up a big coat and nobody needs to know what's underneath - that's my motto!

Fuckitthatlldo I was tempted after your post to stick with wool,but this morning is another one of those days (had a couple recently,one that left me soaked right through to my underwear,no coat that day though!) where it's blowing a gale with heavy rain and I know my coat will be soaked by the time I get back from school run!

Don't think I have much choice but to get a waterproof for rainy days lol at least I don't have to worry about drying coats out in time then!

What I am wearing for the day with a parka over the lot.

I pick the kids up from school and, oh horrors, find I do sometimes change out of my work clothes for it even though my work place is at the casual end of smart casual e.g. I refuse to do the 2 mile walk in uncomfortable shoes so sometimes change those even though I only ever wear flats. It's roasting at work so at this time of year I often have to add a jumper and if it's raining the dreaded raincoat makes an appearance. So all practical rather than sartorial reasons.

Ilse Jacobsen might be worth a look. I got one last spring and have been really pleased with how waterproof and basically not dowdy it is. I got mine half price from Brand Outlet.
