I've been bleaching my hair for the past 2 yrs or so, using a product called Freeze Lights. I've always been told by the assistant in Salon Services that you need to use 40vol (12%) and I've used this.

My hair is very short (like Annie Lennox) so previously it didn't get too dry or damaged as I had it cut every few weeks. But recently I have been trying to grow it a little longer and I've definitely noticed it becoming more damaged.

Can I still get a nice light pale blonde using a less damaging peroxide (30vol ?) and then a toner ? After a wee nosey on google I see a lot of people seem to get a light blonde with this strength of peroxide. To be honest I'm a bit Shock now as everything I'm reading says that absolutely under no circumstances should you use this 40vols on the scalp !

I can get from a dark blonde/light brown to a very pale yellow doing a 30vol bleach bath which is the bleach powder and developer mixed in with an equal amount of shampoo. It's a bit less damaging than using the bleach alone.

Putting coconut oil beforehand, leaving it for a while then putting the bleach on top also helps reduce damage.

I have used 40vol previously but although I got away with it near my scalp (I've also been told since that I shouldn't have used it) it fried my hair in no time. I actually ended up shaving it all off then starting again as it was in such a state.

I'm trying to grow my hair again and thanks to the coconut oil, bleach bathing and never re-bleaching has allowed me to grow it to just about shoulder length with no perceptible damage.

hello the hair dye queen has entered the building! haha

30 vol will be fine:)
the 40 vol is higher strength which bleaches quicker, the lower the volume the longer you have to leave it on but you get a more even dye job and less damage.

Also toning- try directions white or silver toner.
or buy violet and mix a tiny bit with conditioner. it tones and conditions and will last for a good while. Its only a fiver.

hope this helps

Oh thanks for the replies ! I have literally fried my hair and burned my scalp...have been such a total f*nny this week and when I went into Salon Services and told the girl what I had done she was a bit Shock and told me that I was very lucky not to have gone bald !

Just as well my hair is so short. I've been slathering it in olive oil and eggs and protein treatments so it's not quite so dry looking but I have scabs on my scalp. What a silly cow I am...

I'm a short hair girl as well. lucky it grows quickly enough that all the fried bits can get chopped off soon enough. ready and waiting for another colour disaster haha

Hi can I join in with a question please? I have been dyeing my hair at home for the past few years and its in quite bad condition-very dry at the ends and breaks easily. Luckily I have very thick hair and lots of it so am able to hide it!

I tend to use what ever brand is on offer and just buy the lightest blonde but not bleach shade they have.

I really want to have very blonde hair though-think Marilyn Monroe. Is there any way I can do this without ruining my hair even further? or having to pay salon prices?

Thanks.

pinupgirl what colour is your hair now?

Pinupgirl · 22/10/2013 18:20

Well it is supposed to be an all over light blonde but I dyed it 2 weeks ago and the roots looked a bit orange so I put purple toner on it and now bits of it are very ash!

There are definitely bits that are more porous and seem to take more colour.

if you are already a light blonde the. it's going to be pretty easy but it's not instant with the multiple tones.
the ashy colour will wash up.
get purple shampoo and conditioner (john frieda does a good one) and when your in the shower wash your hair normally with the purple shampoo but don't rinse. leave it on your whole shower- obs do this at the start of the shower:)
it's not instant but give it a couple of weeks you will whitenen up & the multi tones will settle.
hope that helps xo

I have been lightening my hair for about 20 years. I am a dark brown naturally but am now a very light warm blond. I just use Loreal light golden blond colour and then I add highlights around the face. Works for me.
