Where can I shop with my dh for clothes? He's 37 and not ready for M&S chinos quite yet (and nor am I) but he despises anything vaguely 'fashionable'. Will not wear t-shirts with anything written on or anything displaying a designer label. Currently he wears a lot of short sleeved checked shirts and trousers from outdoor shops like craghoppers etc but he urgently needs more clothes and he hates shopping! Any suggestions? Good websites/shops?

Gap

sufficiently unintimidating for him (ie still sells short-sleeved check shirts) but is cut and styled well, and everything goes with everything else, so whatever you get there it'll all go.
Also very geared up for Man-Type Shopping eg 'this shirt is nice, I'll get it in two other colours to save time trying on any others'.

It's not cheap though - the Gap outlet at McArthur Glen is fantastic if you can get there. And don't let him buy their lightweight knitwear unless he's very svelte - it tends to be cut on the skinny side and clings to any suggestion of belly. The chunky stuff is fine though.

How about this fashionable item then? Not too showy, no names, he'd just blend in with the crowd wearing this!

Brilliant Rhubarb, the one jacket he owns is very similar to this but luckily black! Ugh.

Thanks for suggestions, will do a bit of recon in Gap before I take him. Haven't been in TK Maxx for years, will give it a go also!

Black binbag?

Definately Gap. We recently took one of my friends flatmates there after he'd asked us to give him a complete wardrobe overhaul to help him get a girlfriend, bless him He was guilty of many fashion sins, most notably ankle basher trousers and the crime that is double denim. He looked GREAT in every single thing he tried on in Gap, and came out with bagfuls. I was actually quite jealous of how easy it seems to shop for mens clothes- none of the faffing about trying to get the most flattering cut, does my bum look big, etc. Find size, try on and buy. They also have a sale on at the mo

My DH is very similar (ie won't wear anything with writing or any branding on).

He likes the stuff in Linea (part of Debenhams). also racing green (also at McArthur Glen).. DH kitted himself out with 3 pairs of jeans, cords etc and shirts and jacket last time we went, so that will do him for another 10 years....

Fat face do a lot of plain t-shrts here Sweatshirts here shirts and all they have is a tiny logo usually in the same colour as the top that you can hardly see.
My dh is exactly the same - hates logos, fashionable stuff etc. but LOVES fat face. Bit pricey but v good quality.

doggiesayswoof · 05/07/2006 15:33

Buying some fat face stuff right now - it's nice and just the sort of stuff he would like. Thanks

If he likes Fat Face, White Stuff's also a good bet - bit pricier, but nicer IMHO. Boden stuff is label-free, but is a lot less street - sale should be on in a day or two. Good thing about Boden is it's generally good quality and lasts well.

crunchie · 05/07/2006 15:42

MY DH is like, would HATE TKMAXX though as you have to hunt through the rails. Not for men!!

GAP is good, some bits of M&S Limited Edition and some Blue Harbour (bit samey, but cheap), Racing Green not bad too. Fat Face and White stuff deffo, DH also loves technical clothes, so North Face, Berghaus etc. These might seem a bit bluegh but there are the odd nice bits and I know that they last forever. Designers at Debenhams are also good, John Rocha, Jasper Conran etc, have slightly quirkier clothes without beoing 'labels'

My dh cannot wear 'fashion' clothes as he is too fat, so these shops are perfect.

Dh doesn't like Gap (which is lucky as I love it and we would look too coordinated) but he does like White Stuff and Jack Wills - both in sales only though.
He has to buy a suit for a wedding and is dreading it (or worse he is dreading not finding anything and me buying him a suit from the Boden sale ).
