Chocolate brown hair dye

I am begging for help in finding a decent brown home hair dye. My attempts so far have resulted in goth black with red roots which was not what I was aiming for at all. Please let me know if you are happy with your mid/dark brown hair dye! Thanks!

I have bought perfect 10 which is on offer at three for £12 in Tesco instore.

I plan to use one either tomorrow morning if I have time or over the weekend.

Tesco only had three shades, light, medium and dark brown.

Al of them looked pretty similar!

I went for the medium which looks a chocolate brown.

My hair is very dark at the moment.

I shall let you know how I get on as I have not used this dye before.

I too am looking for this! Why do they always go red? Arghhh

MrsCocoa · 17/10/2013 23:42

Best I've found are in the Castings range - iced truffle, iced chocolate, iced cocoa are 'cooler' browns. They do fade eventually.

MickleMe · 17/10/2013 23:42

I think you need an ash brown which neutralises the red. Clairol do a light ash brown and medium ash brown I think.

Argh-that's the exact shade I want. So went and bought deep choc something or other-ended up like bloody cleopatra Hmm ridiculous

eggyweggies · 17/10/2013 23:49

Garnier Olia is good.

You want to go for things that say 'cool' or 'ash' to avoid a reddy tint.

I have used Loreal Excellence natural brown for about five years . i have dark brown hair and it is a very natural chocolate shade .i am very happy with coverage , longevity and the condition it leaves my hair . Usually about £6.99 per pack .Hope this helps and Good luck !

I am naturally quite dark and am really happy wihh the John Frieda foams - quite new on the market. I use N5 or N6 and am pleased with the results; no red at all.

Brittabot · 18/10/2013 06:47

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll let you know how I get on. I'll try one of the Castings range, but as I'm dying on top of my own botch job the results might differ a bit. Here's hoping and thanks again!

I was about to ask the same thing as have dark roots and gingery faded hair after being talked into having a bit of warmth in my colour at the salon a few months ago! Off shopping today so may try the John Frieda one.

batterylow · 18/10/2013 08:00

Think I always used to use castings medium Brown btw even though my hair is dark brown because iirc the one that was meant to be really dark brown was red ish. Sounds like they have changed the names though.

Brittabot · 01/11/2013 07:08

I tried Castings Iced Truffle, it's worked really well. It is very dark (but that might be because my hair was almost black already after botched dye job), but is definitely brown rather than black. And conker shiny, so I'm pleased. Thank you for all the help.

Nice and easy medium brown is the perfect shade IMO. There is a medium cool brown too, which is a bit darker.

Watching with great interest after a home dye disaster last week!!

dyed my bleached blonde mop a dark brown which resulted in black and purple hair! have put a coppery colour onto it which is much better, but really want a nice chocolate brown.

I bought one....castings Iced Chocolate, but I think it might be too dark...too scared to try it!

nice n easy is dead cheap in home bargains...might give the meddium one a go.

PrimalLass · 01/11/2013 08:29

LifeofPo, glad we are in agreement. Grin It takes about a week for the excess to wash out then it looks really natural.

Mine needs done again.

whatiswrongwithyou · 01/11/2013 08:42

I love the Castings Ice Chocolate and it always is slightly too dark when I first put it on, but as I have very fine hair that needs washing often, within a week the colours toned down.

I use Lee Stafford Blinding Brunette shampoo to stop the colour fading, bit messy but great for keeping the colour topped up.

FunInTheSunD · 01/11/2013 08:48

I think the reason that the hair goes to dark is that your all putting on a too dark colour... always go for a shade lighter than you want it to go ie if you want light brown go for dark blonde also if you colour your hair regular do the roots first then midlength and ends for the last 5 or 10 minutes otherwise your
putting colour over colour and it will go darker and darker. ..

FragileTitanium · 01/11/2013 09:22

I have very dark brown hair with one massive fluro white streak in the fringe. The only thing that works on me and looks really lovely is Herbatint dark brown (online only). No parabens, ammonia etc etc and very little PPD. Google it - it's fab. Also, the only one I've come across that lets you use the amount you need (e.g. for roots) and then close the bottles to use later. Great if you need to touch up greys more often than the rest of your hair.
